Another data point. I bought my 2006 4.0 with 122K miles. The original owner proudly let me know that it had always had dino oil. I immediately changed to the Mobile 1 high mileage as mentioned above with the additives for seals. I change the oil every 5K, 25K later no leaks and no usage. Toyota filters.

The pretty much the consensus is go for it and use the high mileage synthetic or the reg synthetic

Just bought some for my next change...though I'm not due for awhile.

    Meijer had M1 on sale....$5 off + the $10 rebate....and M1 filters $2 off.

The only 5/30 juice they had left was the Truck and SUV. That's ok though. $13.99 is still a great deal. $20 with the filter.

Went ahead and snagged a filter for the wife’s Corolla while I was at it too

Go watch some of Project Farm's oil comparison videos on Youtube. You may be surprised how good some less expensive brands perform. Costo's full synthetic blend does fairly well in the tests.

I hang out on Bobistheoilguy site quite a bit. Great reads there. I buy oil when it's on sale and/or has rebates.

Currently I have Valvoline 5/30 synthetic in the Taco and 0/20 awaiting the next OC on the wife’s Corolla....bought on a great sale.

And not a damn thing wrong with SuperTech oil. I've run both conventional and synthetic in all manner of friend's and family vehicles. Warren Distribution makes a good product as shown countless times on Bobistheoilguy.

And by the way...SuperTech, Amazon Basics, Kirkland (Costco), Meijer brand, and several others are all the same product made by Warren and packaged for different distributors.

Isn’t going to matter. Run whatever oil meets Toyota’s requirements. Check it and change it at regular intervals. The 1GR-FE isn’t picky on oil.

That's a fairly well thought of oil on Bobistheoilguy. I use it in my daughter's old Yaris. The plus it has, is it's quite heavy for a 5/30 oil...at 11.9 @100° C. That's getting close to light 40 weight.

My daughter's Yaris uses and burns zero oil....and leaks nothing.

It does have a stout detergent additives. So don't be surprised if it gets dirty very quickly the 1st couple of cycles. No worries, as it doesn't effect it lubricating abilities if it's dark. Just means it's doing it's job

First thing I did when I bought my truck last year was switch to synthetic. I use whatever I find on sale. So far its seen Castrol, Rotella Gas Truck, and Valvoline. Even used some leftover surplus 0w40 Euro oil I had for the VW and Mercedes. No difference in performance or oil usage. These engines are not picky. Actually at almost 144K it doesn't use any while my 2017 VW and 2015 Camry do (and the 03 Merc leaks it rather than burn it, imagine that, lol). Filters are controversial, but I've run Fram, Toyota, and currently Hastings. I have a small fleet of vehicles to service so I buy a good bit of filters every year so they are pretty inexpensive and well built.

Its funny how everyone has their favorite brand of oil and they say "its worked great for me!"

In the entire 5 yrs I've been on TW I've never seen anyone say "I tried using this brand of oil and it worked terrible! I'm never using it again!"

These trucks are not picky, just change it on a regular basis and drive it

When I first began doing my own oil changes I noticed a whiteish waxy goo on the underside of the oil cap. Asked Dad what this goo was......his reply "Its wax from the oil. Its more noticeable in cold weather." I was using Pennzoil Dino at the time.

Since then, my skills have grown and my knowledge has shifted.

I will only use 100% Syn in my engines.

That was probably moisture not wax. The fill neck is the highest place in the crankcase, its common to see some moisture there

I like to use the Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer addative paired with Mobil High Mileage 5W-30. Thickens the oil a bit so it helps prevent dry cold starts, lowers your idle (less resistence) and it claims to increase your fuel mileage. I haven't seen a change in fuel economy since I started using it so if it does it doesn't change it much. As others have said in this thread most full synthetic oils are pretty good across the board and you'd be suprised that some "cheaper" brands actually have better performance than an expensive oil. Quality filters matter as well. I use the K and N "race filter" (white one) but OEM or any similar filter from a competitor is probably fine. Just stay away from the cheaper FRAM filters (again probably okay but why put a metiocre filter in to save $10). One could argue it's overkill but I change my filter every oil change even though I could probably change it every other or every 20,000 miles (some filter brands claim this). It just gives me piece of mind and it's not like filters cost you an arm and a leg. I do use a magnetic oil plug as well, again probably overkill but hey it's cheap insurance.

I'm not. Every brand uses a bit of different detergents. I usually switch up from Mobile 1 to Pennzoil Platinum just to keep my engine cleaner. Just use oil from reputable companies and you'll be good.

BTW I've changed my own oil since new and no burning of oil and I'm at 185K.

I always use Purolator Boss filters and Mobil 1 in the summer and Amsoil in the winter... that's just me. I have 195k miles so far. I dont like other people changing the oil since I really have no idea on what they are putting in....I got it brand new from the dealer with 6 miles on it!
