TRD/ Magnuson 4.0 Supercharger Tips, Tricks, and Mods

Hey my dudes. Sorry I haven't been around for a while, I was dealing with - stuff. Or something.

My truck was on stands since March and I finally finished everything. Big things were Spec-U headers, high output alternator, and re-wiring of a bunch of stuff. Other than that about 40 items of maintenance and small mods.

So finally, I'm supercharged with the new camshafts, and my review is great. Headers+camshafts dropped my peak boost from 15psi to 11psi. It sure is nice to have foot pounds again. Note, I have the retard gears on the new camshafts as well.

 

Installed the fuse/diode from HKB and a Northstar AGM battery (alternator voltage booster mod) and the issue has not recurred.

BTW: for those interested, battery was $350 and the fuse/diode was $50.

 

A 4 lb boost drop off from reducing restriction and moving more air? That's massive! That sounds awesome bro! How's the power feel?

 

Yeah I was hoping for that PSI drop, so that makes me happy. Supercharger will work less hard and the belt should slip less (and/or snap less often) too.

The power feels really good, and smooth too. Butt dyno says 10% more... maybe? I'll have to let you know a more detailed review after I drive it some but I'm pretty stoked right now.

 

you beat me to it! I wanted to be the 1st to run the camshafts and my cam gears. Was gonna do it when I swapped in some ruthlaksjdadsfsdbgfdfghnmf spark plugs

 

Lol on the plugs. I thought you was already running with your stroker kit and stuff.

 

I'm running 0 retard on my cam gears currently. I wanted to do a good before and after to see how much difference they make with the built engine/ camshafts.

 

Ah, now I understand. Sweet. Well at least I'm still the "first" to do something even with my extraordinary powers of procrastination.

 

You need to go up pulley sizes. That's considerable boost. You are still heat soaking like crazy unless you are running water/meth injection.

 

Well, I do have water/methanol injection. To your point though I do have a 2.3" pulley to try, will be interesting to see the difference and if it's the same, better, or worse.

 

Data log before and after those cam gears!!!!! Ahhhhhh

 

I wish I could say it'll be an apples to apples comparison, but I will be changing plugs at the same time.

 

I would still consider that apples to apples.

 

It's close and I would agree with you if it wasn't me doing it. Since i'm the guy selling them....

Iridium, ruthenium take your pick. The power differences are minuscule. Looking forward to seeing the differences the cams make though

Data logs after all mods are almost mandatory at this point to see if there is any significant changes in the mods done to the engine!

My 12.x to my 14.3 MPG bump with all other factors being the same disagree with the Iridium vs. Ruthenium is the same ideology. Oh yeah, also, the datalog I took between the two when I made the switchover showed considerably less knock retard under all conditions.

 

Additional 2 MPGs is pretty significant if you are actually measuring this accurately. But just playing devils advocate here. If it was that simple I think major car producers would have been all over that to meet the EPA mandates years ago.

It's been accurately measured over the course of 4000 miles. Logs show an improvement as well in cleaning up knock retard.

I wasn't expecting much when I put them in but I was pleasantly surprised. As always results may vary, but this "mod" worked out for me positively.

Oh, also, Rutheniums are supposedly a new type of spark plug tech designed specifically for boosted engines using a projected square tip or engines that use DFE style spark plugs. It's not that they haven't wanted to use these plugs for whatever reason, it's just because as of current NGK is the only current manufacturer of this style plug and with such issues their application range is still limited.

 

So, all this shit coz I wanted a functioning hood skewp.




Well, not exactly. I also wanted the LCI front end, fancy grill, etc...

Take one thing apart and realize more stuff needs freshening. Those rear flares look like hell too. Might as well paint those as well.
