Coilovers

2004 DCSB 3.4. Is there an aftermarket coilover assembly (don't want to assemble it myself) that will NOT provide ANY lift? I would even settle for coils & shocks separately & pay to have them assembled. Did you note the part about NO LIFT? Can anyone give me a definitive answer? Toyota dealership says Access Cab & DC have different part numbers. All the places I have looked online only show Std Cab or Access Cab applications. I just can't believe no one makes stock height coilovers for this truck. So if you know of a part number or a website for what I want please post it. TIA

It is interesting though that on rockauto they aren't listed for the double cab. It may be that the OE version has a little bit heavier spring? I'm not sure.


You could also get Bilstein 4600 and have them assemvled with your stock springs.

Double Cab or not. They all work for the 3.4l

 

Do you want coilovers or a standard stut and spring? Quick strut, or ready strut? They come assembled.

Replacing the spring might give you a minimal amount of lift, if you currently have tired springs.

 

Many retailers confuse the two terms, but they are all coilovers. Even the OEM ones.

 

I understand they are synonymous, but in this situation it helps to know exactly what he is looking for. The term stock height aftermarket coilover kind of sounds like hes looking for something not OE replacement.

$72 Monroe 171352L Suspension Strut and Coil Spring Assembly for Toyota Tacoma

Monroe 171352L/R on my ‘04 4-cyl extracab back in January and I’m pretty happy with them. My use case is occasional puttering around town and the rare short highway cruise to blow the dust off. As much as I like how the Monroe’s restored the ride height and improved the ride something makes me think that the spring rate that worked for me would be too light for a 6-cyl and/or a double cab.

 

To clarify, I am planning to do a full suspension refresh, front & rear. I just want new coilovers that are stock ride height. I am pretty sure the monroe "quick struts" would be adequate for normal city/highway driving but I do a fair amount of off road stuff & my concern is that the springs might not be strong enough for the additional weight of the DC. I could go OEM but hate to spend that kind of money. If I went with Bilsteins, what shock would I want? And what brand spring? Part number?

 

They aren't synonymous. They are different.

A strut is an integral part of the suspension geometry. A coilover just supports the weight. The stock shocks are coilovers.

 

For stock height go with the 4600s (Bilsteins), front and rear. Technically in the front, you can run the 5100s at stock height too, but the rear 5100s are longer and require a 1"lift or more. For coils, Moogs are a good choice. Honestly, the OEM coils aren't all that special.

Just kinda depends on how much off roading you do. If you consider off roading just driving down some gravel roads, the Monroes I'm sure would be fine, they are more oriented for highway travel, but a few gravel roads here and there won't kill them.

 

jbrandt -- I do quite a bit of off roading. We try to make at least one multi-day trip a a month. Did the Alpine Loop and Stony Pass out of Lake City last week. Have been to Moab several times. Also some stuff around Sedona, Tucson, Bullhead City. I have the Rancho 9000 series coilovers, which add 1 3/4" lift, on my 95 and they have held up well. But I really don't want the lift on this truck. I forgot to mention I have a 3/16" stainless skid plate & may add a winch so maybe should be looking for some beefier coils instead of stock? Any suggestions? Thanks

 

I'm with @jbrandt on this one.

Once you get tired of all the internet research and hemming and hawing and thinking about it, get Bilstein 4600 front and back, and some MOOG coils. This is the exact setup i have on my truck and its great. If you are concerned about the extra weight of the cab for the stock coils (MOOG), then maybe look into some OME coils. Depends on your budget really. My Moog coils were like $80 shipped.

I paid my local shop $40 to assemble the coils onto the shocks with new top hats and would do it again in a heartbeat.

 

"beefier" coils is not really a thing unless you want a lift, or heavier spring rates. And you don't necessarily want heavier spring rates for off roading.

The 4600's and the 5100's are pretty much the same shock, the 5100s are just height adjustable.

With that amount of dirt driving, a set of OME 880's, some 5100s, and maybe a 1" lift shackle in the back would work nicely. You'd barely notice the lift.

Here's mine with a ~1" "lift".

IF you want stock height and don’t want to spend money there is a difference in spring rate from 4cly to v6 4wd but any where you go they only have one shock available for any model I now this bc I installed them and my truck sat 2 inches lower so I did a little digging and went bought shock for a 99 4Runner 4wd V6 and installed them and the ride height is perfect got the stock height back I don’t know why this issues hasn’t been resolved by aftermarket manufacturers
