Access cab dog platform

Thank you for the ideas. This is how I ended up doing mine. I made the seat cover out of a heavy canvas.

 

Stole some inspiration from this thread and decided to take out the jump seats and make the pup a comfortable platform Doggo approves !! Now I just need to throw some carpet on her and some hinges and it’ll be ready to roll.

Great workmanship.
The platform I build goes over top of the jump seats. This allowed my lab to stick his head out the back window instead of trying to stick his head out my side of the window.

 

That looks great and functional to boot.

 

Thanks to all of you for posting you dog shelf mods. I've got a problem though; Roxannadanna Azetbur says that 23-29" up onto that platform is much too high for her to jump into in her senior age. (She's a 10 year-old 80lb black Shepherd mix) I've tried carrying a crate around and flipping it over as a stepping stool, but she's not having it. Anyone have a favorite stepping stool or ramp?

 

Had a friend who built a ramp for his geriatric canine many years ago; basically a thick piece of plywood with some crossways ribs/strips and then covered with carpet runner/remnant. With a few mods, you should be able to make one wide enough to work but still narrow enough to slide underneath the platform for storage. Main thing is to make sure it's sturdy enough and has a solid method to lock onto the truck or the platform you make so your pooch doesn't dislodge it while getting in/out.

 

Used this thread to create mine, and so far so good.

 

Dig all these ideas! Right now I'm just using one of the cheap Amazon rear seat covers. Dont really like it because its still pretty uneven/slick for my pup. Probably just going to run my 4 door with the rear seats down and make some sort of padding.

 

What are the dimensions of the platform there?

I'm trying to build one myself but my access to tools/shop space is nil. Was hoping to do something more like a modified table style like FLJB does here:

But the 2nd gen interior must have narrower AC doors when closed, cause based on my measurements on the 3rd Gen access cab it's at MOST 51.5" with no wiggle room. See pic for extra door space jutting in past the back part.

Point is, I can get the hardware store to cut a slab to size, and its legs to my desired heights, but I wouldn't be able to cut out slots or round corners like some of y'all are doing for the seat backs/belt areas. A drill would be easy enough to borrow and use without needing table space.

 

I got a cheap $30 version of this and added some rubber traction. Works fine for my senior 120lb rottie. His is about half as long but gets him in and out of rear.

 

ended up just risking it and turned out great! Note that I had to glue the carpeting coming off in the bottom left of the pic there, it now sits flush.

Added hinges to the front legs for ease of stowing away.

Pine plywood (3/4" 2x8 cut to size): 37.70
2x3*8' leg (cut to size): 5.10
Carpet runner: 20.14
Hinges and corner brackets: 8.94
Staple Gun: already owned
1/4" staples: already owned
Contact cement and epoxy: already owned (used to carpet the feet and that bottom left corner as seen in the first pic) Also found in dollarama for 2-4 bucks.
Drill with 3/64 bit: borrowed
Total: 71.88CAD

Although total build COULD have been 56.22CAD in hindsight as they sell a 2'x5' runner at the dollar store for 4 bucks, was too late to return the carpet since I already cut and glued it.
Had to add the corner brackets to the back legs since the rear of the AC is wider than the front with the doors closed. Each leg overlaps 2cm (yes mixing my units lol). Recommend using longer staples for this carpet if you have them.

I don't have a dog, built this to stow my things in the back easier.

That is sick! How much did it cost to build this?

Just a wood working question: How did you cut out the openings so neatly? I don't see a starting entrance for your jig saw.

 

Set up start/stop blocks on table saw fence. (or pencil marks if you trust yourself, but be carefull!)( I was a cabinet maker in a former life, so pretty good with wood) Start with the side cuts first on the table saw, finish the corners with jig saw. I bought the plywood last week, just no time to work on it right now, maybe in a few weeks

 

Any chance you could post the dimensions of the platform, and maybe a shot of the interior (mostly interested in the closed door area) if you feel extra nice?

I just drilled a couple of holes big enough to bit the jigsaw blade in there.
