    The Big Question

    why not a Jeep?
they already have the spare tire on the tailgate
and come with a solid front axle to articulate better clearing obstacles off road

removable doors, soft top option, etc
parts supply of OEM and aftermarket might even be cheaper, more popular/available to choose from, etc.

I hear they are either unreliable or break something when you go off road, though I don't know if that's true
and I bet you're all handy with a wrench so fixes are probably DIYable

some have similar engine, 4.0L 6cyl (but straight six) that might come bolted to a manual trans

    Why not Jeep?

Because it’s a Jeep? Their not reliable, comfortable or well made. Yeah, they are good offroad vehicles. But a daily and weekend warrior a Toyota is more practical

I just scanned my Tacoma for the first time ever.
No Diagnostic Trouble Codes stored. At over 100k miles.
    Not a German car thing...

Toyota does seem like a good daily. Somewhat decent MPG, quiet on road, smooth independent front suspension, stable longer wheelbase, usable truck bed, and more

Jeeps just look so cool lol
    the interior design too
but I've only driven them briefly on occasion

I wonder what Jeep unreliability is.
Like the parts are just all shit and weak, breaking suspension components off road?
Or one particular type of thing like they all tend to have electrical problems?
    Or maybe it's everything
cooling issues, A/C issues, electrical issues, transmission issues, etc.

usually with certain car companies it's only one or two of those types of things they get "famous" for
    Subaru = head gaskets
    and so on

I dream to beat a Jeep off the road
but I have not yet attempted this
I plan to upgrade to Bilstein 5100's soon
Maybe Then, I Can Beat All Jeeps...

I had a Jeep for 3 years. I had nothing but problems with it. Exhaust manifold cracking multiple times, transmission problems, seat breaking and more so that I can’t remember. I hated it, getting rid of it was the best decision I made.

You put a JK in the pic, that doesnt have the legendary 4.0. It has either a 3.8 (super unreliable) or the 3.6 pentastar which is okay I guess.

The famous I6 came in the generation before the JK (the TJ), and the XJ Cherokee.

    lce headers, ome suspension,
I love having a bed. Passengers can suck it up and squeeze into tight spaces lumber, surfboards, and mulch cannot. Also the longer wheel base makes dessert wash board much easier. If you want to do crazy rock crawling stock, maybe go for a jeep. if you want a good daily that can buzz down fire roads on weekends np, go taco.

I need to start keeping a tally of all the jeep drivers i have helped when they got stuck in the bush. maybe stencils like ww2 bombers on my door.

honestly I don't know enough about Jeeps to know which one is "the good one"
I heard it's like 2001 era or something
    maybe even older than that

    Weird enough,
when it comes to dirt off road trails, Jeeps used to speed past me on my pencil-thin OEM shocks.
But after upgrading to Bilstein 4600's (cheap slightly better ride) I always pass them.
But never tried competing on serious obstacles yet (rock crawling, etc.)

Check out Matt's Off Road Recovery on youtube. He has an XJ Cherokee that pulls out 1 ton trucks daily.

My mother has a pretty sharp 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport and I can say from experience- it's so uncomfortable. It's not annoying for short rides and it is fun to have the top off, but it is so loud and impractical. It shakes, wheel rotations/alignments that are determined by an electronic machine at a mechanic shop are usually wrong and causes it to still shake awfully. It has no luxury, neither do most tacomas, but it's worse. We love it, but the transfer case already went out and we just don't drive it through that difficult of trails because it's a pain in the ass. Sorry for the weirdly uncropped photo. I don't have any other ones on my laptop lmao.

The XJ's are awesome but not really comparable. They are tiny, slow, poor on road manors etc. They are reliable and great offroad, but they have many short comings.

I had one before my Tacoma.

The new wranglers have poor power plants, many issues. But the resale is off the wall, similar to a Tacoma.

The resale on Jeep wranglers are insane. That is a pro for them.

As a guy that has owned 2 (2 door wrangler and Grand Cherokee Laredo) I can say this, I didn't have much problems out of the 2 I owned. A wrangler is like driving a lifted go-cart everywhere. Even after replacing the soft top or running the hard top you just have to get use to the noise. The new engines won't last as long as the Tacoma but they are getting better. The Grand Cherokee can't tow without having transmission problems in the long run, and they are plagued with electrical problems which make them not in the same league as the 4Runner.

I agree, the new ones are whatever. FCA continues to rank lowest in reliability year after year. I heard FCA is changing their name to get away from the "Fiat" in the name

But there are reliable Jeeps and unreliable ones. Can't put a TJ and a JL in the same group and say all Jeeps are unreliable.
