    Hi everyone,

Has anyone successfully swapped either the 4.7L V8 or the new hi-force 5.7L V8 into a new model, 05-08 tacoma?

I'm particularly interested in swapping the 5.7L V8 into my Tacoma. What would be involved in the process? Could I just change the engine, or would I have to change the tranny and drivetrain as well?

How long would this process take and how much would it cost?

    Thanks,

    Dan Powers

I have not done this nor am I an engine guy, but i would think that you would have to change out all the mounts, any prolly a tranny too cause something tells me that the tranny for a 4.0L wont mount up to a 5.7L. prolly have to get a new computer and wiring. just seems like a whole lot of work. if it were an old truck, with crabs, it would not be so bad but with all the things that have to be plugged in not really worth it IMO.

    Hmm,

I know that toyota offers the 4.7L V8 in the 4 runner now, and will in the Tacoma coming up too.

My truck is an 05. The 4.0L V6 was 245hp stock (they adjusted it for emissions in 06+ and it decreased to 236hp).

A combination of a K&N cold air intake and cat black dual exhaust increased power about 1/3 to around 300hp.

Do you think putting a supercharger on top of this setup might be a good alternative, or does the v8 simply have more power because it has more cylinders?

On top of my current setup, how much power do you think the supercharger would add (ie. what would the total horsepower be?)

    Thanks,

    Dan

I think that the super charger would give you an increase but to what number i have no idea? If I may ask, why r u looking for so much power? IMO the V8 will have more power cause its a bigger engine, unless you put alot of bolt-ons on it in that case the money spent might not out weigh the increase. but thats your call.I am perfectly happy with the power output of my 4.0 V6.

It wasnt adjusted for emissions. It is simply a new way of rating the engines. The 05 has the same h.p. numbers as the 09 and all in between.

Sorry to break this news to ya, but your K&N intake may have LOST you a few h.p., and your cat back may have only got you about 10.

Intakes hurting performance only happens when the AFR gets messed up (leans out too much causing the knock sensor to make the AFR too rich). Putting a cai on a vehicle will always be beneficial as long as the AFR is tuned.

As for 300hp.. Where are you getting that number? Hate to say it, but there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that you have 300hp from an intake and catback.

The TRD s/c will put the crank hp at 304hp (if i remember right) on the 4.0L. But you could get as much power if not more for a lot less money then swapping a v8.

I think the key words here are " Putting a cai on a vehicle will always be beneficial as long as the AFR is tuned ".
The tests I have run have been with these "Cold air intakes" bolted up to stock with no tuneing. Also, the ambient temps have been pretty hot. Over 100*. Not much in the grand scheme of engine temps. Last test on a K&N intake I ran showed almost a 6 h.p. loss accros the board. I compared my results to some other idependant tests I found online, and they seemed to match. BUT, These were simply bolted on and ran. The tests I have done with aftermarket parts have been done how I feel most of the general public would do the install. I.e., no tuning, just bolt on and go. :)

To the OP, a 4.7 swap should be pretty easy, as the Auto tranny in the 1GR-FE is the same used behind the 4.7. There is a chance alot of the wireing would be the same, so all that would be needed for the swap would be the wireing harnesses, and ECU. If you could find a totaled 4Runner with the 4.7, and yank the engine and such, this would keep cost down. Also, depending if you have ever done an engine swap, this would affect cost. FWIW, a supercharged 1GR-FE is putting down better numbers than the 4.7, and its a bolt on install.

    Hi everyone,

I have a place up at 11,600ft elevation on Hoosier Pass (7 miles south of Breckenridge, C) and commute over the continental Divide to Denver and back twice a week, often times pulling a 8x14 tandem axle utility trailer. So the truck just has to work too hard to get up the passes. It needs more power.

It wasn't a K&N exhaust I used... I forgot the brand, I bought it from autoanything.com. It showed the dyno studies on the engine and said it would increase peak horsepower by 15lb/ft, but drastically increase low end torque by as much as 50. It showed the actual test data, and the torque curve maxed out at very low revs.

With the intake... you could notice a *bit* more power on the 0-60 and full throttle acceleration. But what got me was the low end torque increase was just incredible. The amount I used to push down on the gas pedal to get the truck to go actually spun out the tires. So their data was probably correct about it's effects on low end torque.

I lifted the truck 4" then put Ironman LT 285/75/R16 10 ply studded tires on it. The truck just lost all its power, not with the lift, but with the tires. You'd just have to mash it to keep up at freeway speeds.

I put a MBRP dual exhaust on the truck next, and replaced the old dirty air filter with a new K&N one (the long version, like 8").

The power gians were INCREDIBLE with the new exhaust. Again, I was spinning out the wheels with the normal amount Id push on the gas just to go. The mechanic who drove it before and after said it was just crazy the power difference.

THe truck must have lost 1/3 of it's power with those tires, and it gained it all back and then some with the exhuast. I can actually notice then when I press the gas to accelerate in 4th or 5th gear, rather than overdriving, the engine isn't shifting down, and the truck is able to speed right up. Going on steep offramps on the freeway where it normally shifted down the 3rd, it keeps on going in 4th or 5th. Pulling the trailer down highway 6 when it goes up in elevation, I used to have to shift down to 3rd to accelerate, now it just takes off in 4th.

So if it was 235 stock, and then 250 with the air intake. The MBRP said it would increase power 15% on that model, which would add another 37.5hp. The thing is, I think that the combination of the huge air filter and the dual exhaust has significantly increased the air in / air out efficacy of the engine. More air in and out means more gas being used, and more gas being combusted with more air obviously equals more power.

If the truck were about 240hp stock, I'd estimate it's quite reasonably 25% more powerful than it was originally. But all these toys have added a lot more weigh too. I guestimated it's pulling about 300ph (if not just over), but that won't quite do the trick.

THe 5.7L V8 pushes 381hp. Now that matched with an intake an an exhaust might push some thing like 460hp, with a 20-25% increase from the upgrades. THat would sure be nice.

Ive never seen a power increase of 20-25% just from intake and exhaust upgrade. And I'm not talking just import small displacement engines.. I run 10.7 in a normally aspirated small block chevy running pump gas on street tires. I build power houses ALL time, and monster trannies to move the power adequately.

Seems like what would be best for you IMHO would be to Sell it and get a the old tundra with the 4.7 or a new tundra with the great financing options.

the 4.0 supercharged will run about 300 hp and like 335 ft/lbs instead of the 381hp and 401ft/lbs from the iforce. not to mention the s/c will only cost about 4500 bucks and can be put in in about 6 hrs. the engine swap will take much longer then that and cost much more. there are also a lot of laws you have to comply with when you swap engines. the trd s/c is covered under warranty too where the v8 wouldn't be. just s/c it if power is the problem.

get your truck on the dyno and actualy see how much horses are really there. I really doubt you are pushing 300 hp from just an intake and exhaust...
