New to Toyota, I’ve had my 2005 4.0, 6spd 4x4 taco for under 2 months and started having issues getting it into reverse. It started out where it wouldn’t go in u less I drove around for a while. So I was just being smart about backing into spots on arrival or parking in a way I wouldn’t need to reverse out. Yesterday I did a bunch of driving around and couldn’t get it to go in at all. It’s a 2005 so I have the shared brake / clutch fluid and there’s the proper amount of fluid.

what could it be? Every other gear shifts fine.

    here’s a video of it

Take out the stick shift and make sure the little nylon bushing that’s usually on bottom of the stick shift isn’t gone. That’s where I’d start.

There is also a nylon bushing that cups the base of the stick shift that may be worn out also. Replace both while your there.

The nylon bushing at the base of the shifter seems fine. Did not see anything else out of order.

Replace them both anyways. If I remember correctly reverse is not a synchronized gear. The nylon on the ball of the stick can be worn and be smaller, the other one sometimes may come apart it’s actually two pieces glued together you’ll notice or is worn. It causes the stick shift to sit low and not catch the shift forks correctly.

Didn’t see a second one that might be part of the problem. Anyone have a diagram of how they go together?

The other one in the pic just sits in the bottom of the housing. It comes as one piece. You’ll notice it’s two different colors. When you buy it will all be one piece even though it’s actually Two pieces.

Assuming an unknown history, it's entirely possible it's clutch replacement time. Difficulty going into reverse is often a sign of a badly worn clutch.

    This is it right?

I know where the little white one goes but what about the green one?

Ugh I hope not. Just freakin got this thing. All other gears are fine and shifts smooth. Watch the video of the shifter just being sloppy

Okay, couldn't see the video earlier. Yeah, that's definitely not worn clutch (the clutch still may need doing, but that's not a symptom!). Agree with the others, bushings first step. Anyone know what the forks are like in these boxes?

Thank you so much for all the help and guidance. Worked like a charm. Just wish the part was more readily available. Couldn’t find it locally anywhere. Had to pay for overnight shipping. But I have reverse back! Seems a little looser than I expected. Maybe I didn’t get the nylon bushing to seat all the way in to the top of the trans?
