Ford Courier vs base Tacomas.

I run a business that uses base Tacomas and older model Rangers. I'm going to need to replace several trucks next year and if the Courier is even close to what's being predicted it looks like a better choice for my use. Did anyone hear if Toyota going to jump in the game and try and compete with a work truck Tacoma? I need to replace 2 trucks next year and 3 the following. Would prefer to keep them all one brand. Mixing the Tacomas and Rangers been a bit of a hassle

Ford has had so many serious issues that I would never consider a new, untested, Ford anything. Ask any '03 and up Ford Super Duty owner what they think of Ford. The 6.0L diesel was junk. The V10 was junk. Their automatic trannys of that era are junk. There's lots of '03 and up Super Dutys being parted out because of serious expensive problems. The '02 and up Ford Ranger 4.0L is the dumbest designed motor ever and known for problems. Toyota definitely got it right with the 2nd gen Tacoma 4.0L

 

Last Ford I bought was a 2005 F150 it was a POS. Before that I ordered a 94 Ranger it was a POS too always in for warranty work. Maybe they got better since then, buy one and see.

 

My father had a contracting business many years ago when I was a teenager and drove the old little ford courier truck. Had a mazda engine in it. So is there talk they are coming back with the Courier?

 

My 2013 Focus was going to cost more to get it fixed than it was worth so I got rid of it. It ate through trannys like a fat girl eats ice cream on prom night. My 2015 Escape had electrical gremlins that were untraceable. I had to get rid of it because I couldn't trust it to keep my wife and kids safe anymore. My buddy's 2019 f-250 got replaced with a dodge rebel because he couldn't keep it out of the shop.

I will personally never purchase another Ford.

 

Yes. My dealer saw one. Said unibody AWD single cab, just over 5' bed, and a 4dr w/smaller bed, not sure payload/tow capacity but better than a Transit at $20k price range. Would sure beat what I'd pay for base Tacomas, Rangers or even Frontiers right now and should work fine for my use.

To be honest, as reliable as the Tacomas have been they are overkill for my use.

 

My dad has had a couple recalls on his 19 F-250. One for the doors not staying closed when it's cold outside, the other for the tailgate opening on it's own when it rains.

 

Reliability is overkill? How much money are you going to lose when a Ford breaks down on the job? How about pissed off customers when you don’t meet time expectations. Besides all that, Toyotas retain their value so well that you can drive the wheels off them for many years and still sell them for almost as much as you paid for them.

 

My first vehicle was a Ford Courier. It was a real POS. When we would cruise up and down the town strip, about every third pass, we’d pull into the abandoned store parking lot, run through a mud puddle, my buddy would jump out, hold up the back right fender as I gave it all I had. It would just barely spin the tires, but everyone got a good laugh. It’s the last Courier I’d buy.

 

That's not an entirely accurate statement. The only problem the V10 had was the spark plug issue that all Triton engines suffered from. The problem was easily avoided by changing the plugs at the proper time, and using a reasonable amount of torque when setting them. The 4R100 is also not known to be problematic if treated properly. The 6.0 Powerstroke was a complete pile, though.

That being said, I have a 2019 F250 6.2L for work, and that truck is the reason I personally bought a Chevy 2500 instead.

 

Hey I may be mistaken but fords are not popular here. Just to be fair my dad had a 73 LTD we beat the hell out of. It was a tough car 400,C6 and 9 inch rear end. That’s a tough combo

 

I want to see what the Courier will look like. Thought they are available elsewhere on the globe, if it's a Escape with a bed I'd pass. Ford Bronco with a bed, now that's interesting. I've found the new Ranger to be more interesting since the release of the new Bronco, though the Ranger hasn't changed since 2019.

 

I knew some people who worked for a towing company. I heard the V10 couldn't get out of it's own way compared to the Powerstroke.

 

All of our sales staff are issued F150s. After three years those get passed down to be used as plant and mine vehicles. We have some 20 year old trucks that are still reliable enough to run underground. The Ford trucks are solid despite the anecdotes.

Despite that, if you have a need for two to three now, I'd still stick with Toyota. The new couriers are too unknown. No guarantee of stock, parts availability might be tough for a year or so. And unibody vehicles don't quite take the abuse of a base employee that's in the mood to hoon it.

The SR Access Cab with the utility package is the Tacoma version of a work truck, 6ft bed, a foot longer and likely wider bed than the upcoming Ford courier (or whatever they end up calling when it comes out in 2022) Tacoma is mid size this one looks small like the old S10.

 

Probably be better off with a Ridgeline over the Courier.

 

That looks like a 2010 Ford Fusion. Utility package should be standard on all AC.

 

I had a Courier in 1982, or so. It was a 4 cyl, 2 wd, 4 (5?) speed stick & manual choke. No air, just a basic truck. I don't remember that much about it so I guess it was neither great, nor terrible. I drove it for about 5 years. If I remember right, it was the basis for the Ranger that Ford started to sell in '83, or '84. I do remember that the guy who bought it wanted the Japan built truck over the US Build Ranger.
