They're a whole other thing down here.
I think because there aren't as many, plus hunting pressure.
Never easy to hunt no matter the season.
Though I've read about them up in Canada behaving exactly as you describe.

Mind you, ruffed grouse are northern woodland birds.
Same family as Ptarmigans and Spruce Grouse.
They have the same pectinations on their feet that turn them into effective snowshoes during Winter.
Ruffs in PA are at the southern edge of their suitable range.

Grouse are rather odd birds.
It's basically impossible to farm raise them for the purpose of releasing them to be hunted.
Any contact with humans when they're chicks and they might as well be domestic chickens.
And there's no sport in shooting a chicken.

Pheasants, on the other hand, are impossible to tame.
They can be (and are) raised in huge numbers for stocking State Game Lands.
Within a day of release and they're wild.
Maybe not quite as smart as ones not farm raised, but very wild and totally averse to humans.

Pulled 50 shells on 5-stand yesterday with pops. Hit about 35!!! We need to adjust the comb. He gets a headache after like 15 shots.

 

That's impressive.
I confess I never got the hang of 5 stand.

 

Fucking Pectinations!! FTMFW!!!!

 

How do you adjust a comb properly??

 

Every fall Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) grow skin-like fringes called pectinations on either side of each toe. They serve as snowshoes, helping grouse stay on top of the snow when walking, as well as cling to icy branches while eating the buds of poplars and other trees in the winter. In the spring grouse shed these adaptive fringes.

Ornithological texts describe these growths as appearing in the fall, but usually do not specify exactly when they develop. A recent look at a road-killed grouse’s foot (photo) showed that pectinations have begun to develop, but have not completed their growth. The pectinations shown here will double their length by the time snow flies.

 

I'm far from an expert on the subject.
But a couple points:

First of all, it has to be high enough for you to have solid contact with your cheek while having the correct sight picture.
If you let it get a running start it will hurt you.
I personally set up my trap guns to have the front of the comb angled very slightly away from my cheek.
