So this is a first - wife's Kia was making a rotational scraping noise after braking. Took the caliper off and there was wear on the clips that hold the pads in, where they cross the inside of the caliper. Meant to take a picture but forgot, anyway seems like the rotor has grown by means of rust to the point where it's near to rubbing on the inside of the caliper. I beat it with a hammer and there was an outside rim of rust that just came right off and to look at it now you'd never know. Anybody ever come across something like that and will beating on the rotors cause them to explode next time she's on the highway?

Chipping the rust off the rotor is a pretty normal part of a brake service! Provided you weren't beating on it hard enough to crack it I'm sure it's fun!

And i bet Mitch even meant *Fine!

I also think you are totally okay, but my opinion should mean nothing to you.

Did you blast everything with brake cleaner and lube the sliders? If you didn't, you are still totally okay from a safety perspective. In my untrained opinion.

    Fun works too :D

I meant to hit it with brake cleaner but all of a sudden the caliper was back on and oh well, my hands weren't that greasy.. I took it for a test drive and it felt normal. What do you mean by lube the sliders?

The Kia would have floating calipers. When the piston actuates, it pushes one pad against the rotor, and pulls the other pad against the rotor.

There are (generally) two sliders that connect the two halves. During a service you'd take the sliders out and clean the gunk off them, and then lube them with some sort of silicone based lube (oil based lubes will swell the rubber boots and can cause the sliders to leak and seize).

    (not my picture)

Offered that guy with the 05 ACLB $650 for the gearbox and t.case (incl new clutch but no actuator) and the steering rack and tie rods. Good deal you think?

That seems pretty good, the going rate for a junk yard trans is 850-1200 bucks!

What's the best wheel bearings to go with for the 2nd gens? Mine are starting to make noise so I should probably do them before winter.

Koyo make them for Toyota. They are fairly reasonably priced and easy to come by

I am looking at the Dorman hub assemblies out of pure laziness. Probably source an NSK/ SKF/ FAG bearing once they let go and rebuild the hubs at my leisure. Just hurts looking at the 400 dollar price tag for the pair.

    That's not too bad honestly.

The bearing is like 120, Toyota seals will run you ~50ish so you're looking at almost 200 bucks a side.

Those numbers are from when I last did a wheel bearing, and also they're from memory.
