what is this "engine protecting itself" i keep hearing? The VVT-i is oil pressure controlled thats not a safety system for running out of oil.

It’s BS. I think what the guy who brought it up meant was that apparently the new trucks have a low oil level sensor (my BMW has one) that causes the truck to go into limp mode when triggered. Now I wouldn’t wanna do any RPM let alone 2k with low or no oil in the motor.

Anyone know if there actually is a low engine oil level shut down on the Gen 3 3.5l engine?

My Taco is never going back to the dealer, save for recalls that left unaddressed might shift liability to me. Something about dealership service departments that I do not trust. Never have. Their profit motive is too strong. I am sure their employees are mostly honorable people who do not do things intentionally. Yet, over a lifetime I have heard many horror stories like this one. Having to maximize shop book hours to maximize their income will invariably produce some mistakes, and I don't want to roll the dice that it will be me. So do it yourself. The first tool you should buy is your own oil filter wrench. The second:

    20190614 - Shop lift, 10,000lb Revolution RTP10.jpg
One good swipe of your credit card at the dealership service payment window will more than pay for one of these. Do it yourself, confident that YOU did it right. No matter how much they are paid, nobody is going to care for your car better than you will doing it for free. You can pay them, or you can "pay" yourself with peace of mind.

There are a few cases where it does this. A lot of times you spew white smoke out the exhaust. Good times!

YES. The one in the picture. Make you a real good deal on it too. Garaged and unused lately, no longer needed. We go light now. Easier. Happier. Less to pack before you go, less to clean up when you get back:

Now, we are keeping it simple. I have been taking VERY GOOD care of your motorhome. Come and get it.

Sorry to hijack your the thread, but I really want to move it. Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Unfortunately, there are no good updates. The 1000 mile mark has not been reached, I anticipate 1000 miles will come in about 3 or 4 weeks. A message was sent to Mr. Sparks at Legacy Toyota where I asked for a list of exactly what test would be run at 1000 miles, a print out of the DCT codes, a refund of the $175.47 service job and asked him if the DCT codes will effect the future value of my truck. This letter was sent January 28, 2020 and there has been no response.

I also followed up with Toyota Corporate office asking them to help me communicate with Legacy Toyota and their response was to call the dealership, very disappointing.

The good news is, the truck is running fine, the only change is the engine is revving up (the tachometer jumps to 3000) when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear....this just started and may or may not be related to the oil incident. Additionally, the oil smell is still around. The engine oil level has remained unchanged.

    Thank you all,
    Brenda

Brenda, try calling a local TV station and getting them to do a segment on it. If they agree call Mr Sparks tell him ya'll are coming and give him one more chance. Also, local social media. Post only the facts.
