Then at 40k miles I got a sight unseen trade offer of $33,500.

I’ve looked at those and the Power Wagon... but just can’t get over the $65k+ stickers, even if they are discounted nearly $15k. Lately I tend to own my vehicles 8+ years so the Taco is the safe bet. I don’t yet have a need for that much space or tow rating, so I’ll sit on the sidelines for a bit. But it sure is fun to troll autotrader and the config/build pages and ‘what if’...

 

The only time one considers a Ram is if they're not going to keep it very long out of warranty.

 

Many of the (new) trucks on lots around here are 'work trucks'...meaning no luxury items. When dealers order inventory and spec the trucks they (obviously) look at what their customers are buying/ordering. This is an example of a couple of trucks I looked at a few days ago on the lot

2020 F-150 MSRP of $33,605 discounted to $29,103 (2wd /2.7 ecobeast)
2020 F-150 MSRP of $37,275 discounted to $32,650 (4wd / 2.7 ecobeast)
2020 F-250 SuperDuty MSRP of $43,385, discounted to $38,672 (4wd)

Don't get me wrong: There are luxury King Ranches, Platinums, Limiteds also, but the majority are XL or XLT trims.

Regional Ford Motor Credit is offering 0% financing for 72 months on the F-150s

Most (all?) Ford dealers are moving F-150s at pretty good prices since the new, redesigned one is a few months away. Great time to be buying!

U.S. News and World Report published data from J.D. Powers reliability studies for 12 (!) pickup trucks. Study included both mid-size and full-size trucks

Way down at the bottom (almost) was the Tacoma at number 11 of 12. It was rated lower than all domestic trucks, both mid-size and full-size and every mid-size truck. It proudly beat just the Gladiator ;-)

Seems like Toyota (and many consumers) have been resting on the Taco reputation rather than actual data. Of course, an argument can be made that the studies are stoopid, not relevant, there was a payoff involved, etc, etc. but for now, it is impossible to find a reliability rating that places the Tacoma anywhere near the top, regardless of who did the study. I find that somewhat interesting given the Taco love we all have.

NOTE: The study confirms the Tacoma is reliable, it is just that the competition has actually improved the last 10 years or so, while the Tacoma is basically the same as it has been for a decade. From the report:

If it was paid for I’d consider it but I have no need to get rid of it so I’ll just keep it and luckily I like my truck a lot too.

 

Same here. Just wish it was paid off so I don't have to worry about losing it in a year or 2 when the gummit decides to cut 25% to 30% off my S.S. check. Tempting though because right now I could get out from under the loan and buy a new chebby Spark to tool around town in.

 

I have never liked J.D. Powers, there was a short documentary on how they get paid from car manufacturers to say whatever they want, their reviews are not honest nor fair whatsoever.

 

I like those Power Wagons, I'd like them more if they offered them in a regular cab. Still probably couldn't find one in that safety orange color, so it would still be a wash, and that price tag. Anything close to $70,000 its going to need dual rear wheels.

I wouldn't buy an FCA product given all the bullshit failures i've seen over the years on Ram trucks. It's basically the Pizza Hut of truck purchases.

I'd say it's a fair deal if I wanted to get rid of it. But it isn't nearly enough to tempt me out of a vehicle that I like.

 

I think the thought is that the used prices for Tacoma’s have peaked, and are likely to start dropping.

 

I think prices have already dropped, likely due to the influx of all these tacomas into Carvana's inventory.

Best offer for my 2018 sport 4x4, 14k miles was $35,884. Today they will give me $34,103. I would have considered the deal if they would've given 37k, but even at their best offer when you factor in the "upgrade" price of a new one, plus TTL, it just doesn't really make any financial sense, at least to me.
