    2020 Tacoma TRD 4x4 Off-Road
    Hello all -

I'm about to be the new owner of a 2020 Tacoma 4x4 TRD off-road. It'll be my 1st foray into the world of Tacoma's personally, but I've wanted one or a 4runner since high-school (having a number of friends with both cars over the years). I'm new to the forums, heard this is the best Tacoma truck forums out there for support and community

Now, my basic question is: does anyone know the typical price drop for the prior year's models when the new year's trucks come out? Basically, what will the 2020 4x4 off-road go down to once the 2021 is out (I do understand this can be highly speculative depending on the dealership/seller, but didnt know if you all being involved with Tacoma's for longer knew a basic price drop).

For my research, same gen Tacoma's do not drop like regular/other cars do due to the high resell value Tacoma's seem to keep. Meaning I think, the price of the 2020 won't drop that much once the 2021 comes out since they're both gen3 vics. Let me know if I have that correct.

    - Thanks in advance, be gentle - it's my 1st rodeo =]

I already dropped a deposit on a 2021 TRD Pro
I'm going to see a fully-loaded TRD off road later today, and if they accept 8% off MSRP @1.9% APR (my regional toyota offer), I'll be tempted to get it, other than that I think I'll wait to pay sticker price for the 2021 TRD Pro

Given how crazy 2020 has been, and the current low dealership inventory on new Tacomas, I wouldn't bank on a price drop any time soon.

It's a Covid19 year and 2020 stock is already low so don't expect huge discounts like the big three that give away the farm to move metal

Might want to wait until the 2022 is available and see if you can get a better deal on a 2021. That's if Toyota builds an abundance of 21 models, they might build less 21s than they built 20's. I don't see any differences in the 20 to 21 models other than color availability and, trim packages. The 2020 MGM OR built last Thursday isn't going to be any different than the 2021 MGM OR built in February of 2021.

Yea, unfortunately I'm in the market now and will be buying the truck in 2020. The wife and I are a single-car family, and we're getting rid of the Jetta and are looking to head out to Utah within the next few months. I guess what my concern was, that we'd pay for a 2020 4x4 TRD Off-Road in August/Sept 2020, then they'd release the 2021 in November 2020, then the truck I just bought would be 5-10k cheaper bc they were trying to get rid of the 2020 models if all that makes sense.

I do not believe Tacoma prices drop that fast or drastically bc of their popularity and their resell value, but wanted to see what others had seen on price drops on new trucks once the new year model is released. A brand new 2020 4x4 off-road edition is basically 40k where I live with taxes/title/fees/etc, so it's a huge expense, but the wife and I cannot wait to get one and begin exploring.

    Thanks!

I get what you are saying, and agree that there most likely won't be much of a price drop if any once the 2021s roll on to the dealer's lot. I'd like to find a new 2019 Tacoma or 4Runner that somebody forgot to sell. I'd like to buy a new truck myself, but can't find a practical reason to do so, especially right now. Ford still has 0% for 72mos, a current model F-150 wouldn't be bad. I still don't think I could find a good enough deal on a Ford to convince me to buy one.

I am tempted to drop my 2018 Limited with only 10k miles. With the prices being paid by Carvana, Vroom, and Carmax, I can sell it for a little more than I purchased it for 2 years ago. I just tried to negotiate a deal on a 2020 Off Road. Dealer barely budged. If they are not gonna budge, might as well pay MSRP for the new Pro when it comes out.

2021's have Auto Climate Controls, other than that not much difference.

Oh yeah, I saw that dual zone climate control. I guess that's auto dual zone. I could live with that, but it's probably button operated, and not the traditional three knobs that are there now. Even a simple push button and not a touch screen system, seems more distracting to me, as you have to take your eyes off the road to use it.

I heard complaints that the AC was not that great in the 3rd gens, dual climate was pointless, and an overall upgrade to the AC would have been a real improvement.

I have it in my truck, it's not too bad but don't always use it as you can still do it manually too

I bought my 19 new in September when the 20s were coming out. Sticker was around 39k bought for 32,500 (with cash incentive instead of financing special) after a couple weeks of “letting them sweat”. I brought my own financing which the dealer beat by a little bit (2.5% instead of 2.75 through credit union). I think how much they will discount is region and dealer specific. Right now my dealer doesn’t have a single new taco on the lot. When I bought mine they had 15 or so 19s left in various configurations. I’d find some models you like and show some interest. Try to make a low offer or offer what you will pay 8% off msrp for example. Then leave, they will either sell it to someone else or end up calling you trying to get the deal done after a week or two.

Yea, that's the method I've been using - bringing credit union APR to the table and working with 7 different dealers, letting each try to beat the other. The main issue for me right now - there arent many 4x4 Taco's on the lot (like 1-3 per dealership, some have 0). So I think maybe the pandemic is shorting the supply of these valued trucks right now or something.

Here's the one I'm pretty far on / leaning towards:

I like it! I didn’t want a short bed, but love the color and added features of the off road package are great. Yeah there are major supply issues right now in my area and probably nationwide. That’s obviously working against you to some extent, but if you have a few you are looking at, the dealers likely won’t want to let a sale walk away.

The 2021's are set to hit the lots around Oct. In my opinion if the dealerships are not discounting the 2020's then it doesn't make sense to buy one now. The 2021's is a carry over model, virtually nothing has changed other than the auto climate on lower end trims. Unless you need a truck now (maybe for business) you will take a resale/residual hit in the future. For example, if you bought a 2020 now for MSRP, and I bought a 2021 in 3 months in the same configuration. In 5 years, we both decide to sell our trucks, with all things the same (mileage/condition) I would get more money because my truck is one MY newer even though everything is the same. Generally this is offset by the dealership giving you a nice discount on the outgoing model. If there is no clearance discount and it being so close to 2021 release, that's the reason I quit searching for a deal on a 2020 and put money down on a 2021.

The factory was shut down for roughly 3 months. Toyota is playing catch up now and supply side shortages doesn't help either. Cement is also a hot color.

My 2017 has auto dual zone climate. It doesn’t change the layout of the controls. You just get an Auto button in the center of one of the dials.

It works great. I really enjoy the dual zone as I have much different likes in winter and summer than my wife.

The auto feature I seldom use but works fine as well. Not sure who is complaining, but I would guess they would complain about all most anything to give their pointless existence a sense of meaning.

I enjoy the Auto function too but just don't use it all the time.

I really like the dual zone climate, but i barely use the auto function as it always wants the AC on.

Dual zone is nice, and needed to please the wife! No matter the time of year, she is always cold.

Looks like my truck (Cement TRD OR 4WD DCSB, Tech, Prem, LEDs, mudflaps, tonneau, etc.). I managed 13% off MSRP without any rebates but that was preCOVID and down sales in Feb, and definitely not my first Taco purchase, lol. Toyota already told dealers October allocations/deliveries are 2021s, so I doubt there will be any 2020 TRD deadstock given the current market situation, so I wouldn't expect a big discount, check out the 2020 price thread to get an idea, but most are stuck right now paying MSRP for a TRD OR especially cement and LEDs. I did see a few guys in regions were Tacomas are not quite as popular managing 9% off MSRP recently w/$1000 rebate. Honestly there is no sense waiting to try and land a deal, find one you like and buy it, because in this market there will be another buyer right behind you who will. Definitely a sellers market right now and not a buyers.
