I've posted here before about different things to try to get bug gut stains off my front bumper. I've tried many different things and I think it actually looks worse. I bought the truck this past summer (it's an '07) and I think the previous owner never washed these bugs off, therefor I think they are actually etched into the paint now.

    Desperate times...

I'm now down to considering taking off bumper, sanding down, priming and painting with factory matching rattle can (see link below) paint.

Anyone tried anything like this? Would you? I'm not expecting perfection but I figure it can't look worse than it already does.

I did the grill w/ this paint. did a whole writeup on it. Matches the bumper, fenders..(the areas that have a matte finish vs high gloss...aka hood)

    I figure I'll give it a shot.

I like the paint code in the link...4Q2 (fork you too). I used the blue for my 82 way back when and it matched good. Paintscratch dot com can hook you up with rattle cans off your code too but not as cheap as the duplicolor off the shelf.

For the $7-8 it costs for a can of paint, pick one up and do a test on something else before you go sanding down your bumper.

Keep in mind that in order for it to match properly, you'll need to match the base color under it. Otherwise it's easy to yield results that are a shade too light / dark. Just FWIW...

What if you go to a paint shop and get the code of your truck and have them mix you a can? Then just use this...

    727af4dc_6ae44f24bdd6f925592b8df1e82910b311dd5988.jpg

I found it at home depot for about 5 bucks.

Have you tried this? I'm wondering if a $5 spray gun will spray better than a spray paint can? Interesting...

I'll throw in my two cents on the front bumper. I don't think they use a clear at the factory on the bumper because I too get staining from bugs like I have never gotten on any other vehicle before. Keep in mind my truck gets washed once a week usually so it's not like they are being left there for long periods of time and I have a ton of stains from bugs. The front bumper also scratches way to easy for something for a clear further leading me to believe that they don't use a clear on it. Also my grill surround and hood scoop gets hit with the same amount of bugs with zero stains. Go figure. You would think with the amount of money we paid for these things that the whole truck would have a clear.

I seem to remember a TSB about paint (either the finish was not as smooth as it should be or was it a the lack of paint) that was on some Sport and TRD models with painted flares.

Mine seemed ok so I never paid it any attention... now I'm wondering if the "not enough paint" or "orange peel" finish TSB was related to the bumpers too?

They do clear coat bumper covers and add a flexing agent to keep it from cracking. If you look at any bumper cover on any vehicle the paint color isn't a perfect match. Most of the covers are painted and then shipped to the factory where they vehicles are being assembled. If a body shop replaces a bumper cover on any vehicle they will never get the paint to match perfect either because the paint is being put on two different surfaces (plastic vs metal).

They are "OK" IMO for touchup work around the house, but I would not use one on my truck.

I would try some buffing and polishing before I went to the extreme of sanding and repainting.

Have you tried using HOT water? Don't laugh-bugs are a very gluey type of protein and hot water sort of melts the superglue effect down and eventually loosens up the stains. Beyond that before you sand or paint get a good micro-crystalline compound like "GS-27" and work that around the stains.

Compound was the latest thing I tried without any success.
