not bass fishing or delta-related but i started using bait for surfperch, but I just read that for some baits that get easily flung off the hook during casting, it's better to use a baitcaster (omg i just got it) because when casting on a spinning reel, the finger release causes the line to snap and then the bait flings off the hook.

alot of people like to use spinning reels for surf because the sand gets in the levelwind and jams it up bad. i saw this great video on Ambassadeurs and sand (i have a 'made in Sweden' 5500C ready to go as soon these fires let me get to the beach)

i guess i can just pull off the levelwind to make it more bomb-proof

Yeah I’d have to agree forsure..... but I will say, lots of folks also don’t know how to use baitcasters the right way (tension/brake/finger control) and they end up “flicking” the bait out similar to a spinning setup. Seen it a million times and it took me awhile to learn and I still have my moments. Hell a good example: over the weekend I was out at the river and had some turkey liver on a treble hook. Went to cast (with a baitcaster) like I have a million times before and did that “snap” motion with the cast without even thinking. Watched the bait fly right off my hook and into the river. Lol

Hit a tiny local lake today. I kept hearing this big splash. Some guy was throwing a bluegill imitation as big as my hand. I then watched him hook a giant bass. Unbelievable!

he had a high end kayak. He loaded into a old Toyota probably worth a third of his kayak. Pretty cool.
I caught two. Git thecstick off my new rod/reel. Oh the Shimano DC reel is a game changer for me. I was stupid accurate. I need to buy a second one now. :(

Threw cast net for 3 hours yesterday, finally got enough bait, and skunked out on halibut fishing all day. So we went shark fishing...

It doesn't make or break a fishing day out there, but if going for black bass, they definitely seem to become more active and stacked when the tide is higher. You have a bigger kayak right? Like one you can't really carry but can wheel around? If so, a good spot to get your feet wet on that delta-style of fishing is the Cosumnes river preserve near Mokelumne City. Nice parking lot area, and there is a paved trail down to a dock for easy access with the kayak. Once you get on the water there, you can paddle out into the Mokelumne river and fish however far down/up you want. I've had some good luck out there and its a fairly small river without much current, which is nice for kayaking!

It is! I’m still learning about that place every time I go out. Overwhelming is the best word I can think of when I think about the Delta.

I went to Sportsman’s warehouse yesterday and holy shit! The entire fishing section is gutted. Cool to see more people getting into (or back into) fishing during tough times. Never seen that part of the store so empty. Blew my mind honestly.
