I'm just going by KBB. Not my figures. The high side of private party sell is I little more than $16k. Again, I'm not making the numbers.

I've been in manhood for quite a while. I'm too old to be climbing in and out of a jacked up truck

The camper we have now is 4400lbs dry, I figure after I'm done it will weigh more than that but I'm taking some stuff out as well. I plan on electric brakes and I have a leveling hitch rig. It's just me, my wife and dog. We just sold a 39' 11,500 lb Terry that we stored at the beach. This will be the last camper we will own. When I brought it home to restore it. I used the SUV. Didn't have to pull it but about 15 miles. The rear of the Mountaineer did *NOT* (edited)
even squat when I put it on the hitch. But I like your idea about using the SUV a few times before dropping said coins. I just get antsy looking and don't want to miss out on something.

I went conservative and bought a 4 cylinder manual. Regretted not having and Auto and power for nine years. Recently followed my heart and got the six cylinder and auto and four wheel drive Tacoma. could not be more happier.

obvious solution is tow with the bigger vehicle sitting right there in the driveway

most only tow a few hundred miles to a camp sight
Ur 5lug wont be ruined in just a few hours driving

    about all the $$$$$ wrangling
why have a big stonking truck that U ONLY use 1% of the time
maybe impress the neighbors or ..................... the ' just in case ' !!

U pickup truck Will Tow & NOT fail
    simply adjust
    adapt

    good luck

Even if you trade up to a V6 Tacoma you're going to be borderline with a 4400 lb. dry weight trailer. Once loaded with propane, food, etc. it's probably going to be over 5000 lbs. The number you need to be looking at is the GVWR of the trailer, dry weight tells you nothing.

Your wife's SUV probably won't tow it either. Pulling something isn't the same as towing it. Even though most V6 Tacoma's are rated to PULL 6500 lbs., around 4500 is a much more realistic limit. Not just Toyota, but when manufacturers list a tow rating that assumes a 150 lb. driver in the truck and nothing else; and driven on level roads at sea level For every 1000' above sea level you need to reduce the weight you tow by 3%. Start adding passengers and cargo to the truck and the tow ratings start dropping fast. At just 5000' you take a 15% reduction in the weight you can tow.

The problem is payload. A 5000 lb. trailer properly set up along with the required weight distribution hitch will eat up about 750 lbs. of your payload. Most V6 Tacoma's will have 1000-1200 lbs. payload. That would leave you 250-450 lbs. for the driver, passengers and cargo. Which isn't much. There is a sticker on the drivers door or door jamb with the rated payload on all vehicles. I'm betting the SUV is rated for less payload.

If this is something that will only be towed a few times each year and for short distances I'd probably pull it with a V6 Tacoma. But you're going to have to pack carefully and maybe leave some stuff behind. You won't be able to pull it and also carry anything like firewood or a generator in bed of the truck. If it is something you plan to travel long distances with, especially in mountains you need a bigger truck.

And don't assume just any 1/2 ton is any better. There is a lot of overlap. Roughly half of the 1/2 ton trucks on the road won't tow any more than a Tacoma. And some of them will tow more than some 3/4 ton trucks. Choose carefully.

No, as referenced earlier, if you don't intend to camp often or pull very far, your Mountaineer (or if you can get past the armchair pricing annalists on TW, and end up with a V-6, tow prep Tacoma) may well suffice. I have been RV camping (now glamping) for 30+ years (now retired), I now tow 30', 8500lbs, OFTEN. I learned the hard way $$$$$, as I moved up in length and luxury, they all required more tow power. My current F-250, Super Duty diesel should be my last RV truck.

extra leaf springs on 2012. Topper on 2015.
So true on all below. As someone who towed horse trailers for 20+K miles. Add the plain fact of pulling vehicle's "anchoring" weight/wheel base vs trailer's, for wind tossing the rig around. As with the "wind" of a passing semi even.

Depends on HOW much towing you plan on doing? You can get by with a F150 with a small V8. I towed 2 horses with a 80's F150 & smallest V8, & then a 90's E250 6 cyl. To a 2004 F250(I had bought a 31 RV Trailer). Horse trailer(w/ brakes) dry weight 3300# & 2 horses added at least 1100# each. All vehicles had Electric trailer brakes controller. The total vehicle weight & wheel base makes a lot of difference safety wise.

    Agree with this 100%

The V6 Tacoma is not your tow vehicle either. My current dilemma is a new boat I’m looking at with a dry weight of 2750. Add the trailer, the outboard, fuel, passengers...I’m done. 6500 adds up quick. Will it pull it yes. Will it stop, is a better question. Legally and morally you have an added responsibility when towing for you and your passengers as well as other vehicles on the road. If you have an issue, and insurance can prove you exceeded capacity, good luck.

just my 2cents and my reason for 1/2 ton shopping.

You also said it yourself when you said your truck is rated 3500 but you wouldn’t tow over 2000 because of fear of ruining your truck. Add that same ideology to a potential 6500 rating in the V6 and where does that leave you comfort wise? 4500? 5000? Just sayin’

Well I guess I'll be looking for an F-150 with a 5.0 and tow package unless that won't tow it either.
