Anything welding

I'd get rid of the quick connect. Just plumb it permanent. None of my welders have a quick connect. The quick connect makes no sense to me.

 

I agree, but Its going to take a week or so to do that.

 

I like to be able to use gas and solid wire at home in the shop but switch to flux core outside or remote.

That said, I don't have a quick connect, just a flared fitting but it's easy enough to disconnect in a few seconds.

 

I have an air quick connect that leaks if it's positioned certain way with the connected hose hanging down. I can just lift and put stress on it in a different direction with a bungee strap and it almost completely stops leaking. Not a permanent fix for you, but as you said, maybe save you some Argon until you can replace it.

 

Any air DA you guys recommend? I've always cleaned metal with grinder but too heavy imo.

 

but you only have to remove the fitting if swapping tanks....
I'm ass-u-me-ing that your welder is mounted on a cart? why even bother disconnecting the gas for flux anyway? Just shut it off, switch to flux core and weld.

without a welding cart, or going to a weird location, I could see taking just the welder and removing the rest.
anyhow, back to my hole......

That's what I meant by remote.
disconnecting the gas and throwing the little inverter welder in the truck to take to a farm and weld flux core.
No way I'm taking the cart and the gas bottle and all that when I can put just the welder on the floorboards
My post was meant to be an answer to the question of why someone might want a quick connect on their gas connection.... that's all.

 

Why can't things be easy?

The male end of the quick connect is built into the solenoid. Looks like I need to get more than just a couple fittings.

 

It should still be a 1/4" pipe thread into the body of the solinoid. Install a nipple, coupler then the proper flared fitting.

That is a goofy set up.

What welder is that?

 

It's a BOC Smootharc 185. Nothing special. I bought it about 6 years ago. I don't think they do much in the US but in AU and the UK, they pretty much have a monopoly on compressed gas. ~$14B a year. Their welders are ok

I give them credit for putting together a rig that is compact and quick to set up.

Maybe just get some new, higher quality quick connects?

It never has more than 20 psi of pressure behind it.

If you really wanted a bullet proof quick connect, use hydraulic quick fittings. But in my opinion, air quick connects should do the job just fine if you get some decent quality fittings.

It looks like the solenoid base is machined from one piece the air Quick Connect on one end threads on the other.

Being in the UK and Down under 220VAC coil for the solenoid

BOC is in the Linde group which now owns Praxair

 

Made some steel bedside caps today. The plastic ones had a visible seam from where I bobbed my bed and I wanted to get rid of that. Want the bob to be as seamless as possible.

Anyways, came out pretty good. Once they were all done I used those finishing pads on them. Really made a difference in the finished quality, I’m a big fan. Made it much smoother and knocked off some millscale, and didn’t leave any visible lines.

 

What type of fitting is this?

 

Looks like garden hose or washing machine hose.

 

Here's a couple more. This is the gas connector from my tig torch to the welder. I need to buy a replacement on the side from my other post.
