Clapped out shitbox = every XJ ever. Not shitty sounding bro-lean domestics, but we do have a few of those flat-billed coal rolling window lickers around my parts, too.

 

Gentle advice I wish I could give myself at your age- if it's got a lot of problems, I personally wouldn't spend a dime on it. Not exhaust, not speakers, not suspension, nothing. Not unless I had both the money and knowledge to make it not have problems.

In fact, start there. Learn how to fix it, and invest your money and time in that. Otherwise you arent going to be driving this one in a years time from the sounds of it.

 

That sounds great and I wish I took that advice 2 months ago becuase now it’s lifted on big wheels and tires. But it’s all I got, and Im at least trying to make it look good. I work about 20 hours a week to try to pay for repairs and stuff now, so I’m getting on that stuff soon.

I'm a young guy with a second gen as well. OP, trust me when I say that no matter what you ever do to your truck, you will ALWAYS be made fun of for having a mid-sized Japanese truck. You don't wanna make that any worse by trying to "fit in" w/ the big 'Merican trucks. Best thing you can do is work and do the little, cheap repairs your truck needs. Educate yourself and learn how to work on the truck. That's how you'll get the most out of your money. Don't dump a bunch of money in the truck cause you will never get that money back and you'll feel like shit when the engine craps out and ur broke. Save your money.

Seems like what most people think "clapped out" means is what these trucks sound like. All kinda makes sense as far as terminology. I don't know what is worse, the fact that squat trucks exist or people make them sound like that. Doing both? Complete anarchy.

But, you do you. Seems pretty easy, just take a Sawzall to random parts of the exhaust.

Alright dude, I'm going to interrupt the steady flow of shit heading your way. Want some real advice? This guy is spot on:

Fuck what your friends think of your truck. It might seem like it matters now, but I assure you that it does not. If you want to spend money on it, get it running right. Learn how to perform maintenance tasks and do them regularly. Once it's fully mechanically sound, then start thinking about modifications and customization. Mods should add to the truck's already impressive capabilities, never detract from them. This isn't the exciting way of doing things, but it's the best way to make sure your $100 is the start of an investment, not wasted funds. I dunno about you, but I will never light $100 on fire.

The other, more exciting option is putting money into nonessential bullshit. This money will go up in smoke when the truck fails irreparably due to mechanical failure or neglect. Then you're starting from scratch. All. Over. Again.

I just got my truck like 6 months ago. I might be a fair bit older than you (32), but the excitement of getting a new vehicle isn't something that diminishes with age. I had all sorts of dumb mod ideas rattling around in my head. Eventually, I calmed down and applied some critical thought to my situation. I could mod my truck to hell and back, but it wouldn't matter if it didn't run reliably. It wouldn't run reliably if I didn't get regular maintenance done. I can't afford dealership fees for all the maintenance required, so I had to learn how to do stuff myself.

That reasoning brought me to my starting point: I had to learn how to take care of my shiny new toy to keep it in top shape without breaking the bank. Only then did I venture into the world of lifts, armor upgrades, auxiliary lighting, and all sorts of other nice-to-have, but ultimately nonessential, stuff.

 

Man. I’m so glad it’s Friday.
