High mileage 4.0?

Hey all,

My wife and I have two vehicles, a 2010 Subaru Forester and a 2003 4Runner 4.7. We are going to get rid of the 4runner and purchase a new vehicle. We are looking at 3 row SUV, Highlander, 4Runner and Ascent.

If we get the 4Runner, we'll keep the Forester. However, if we get the Highlander or Ascent, I want to offload the Forester and purchase a 2nd gen Tacoma. I had a 2005 DCSB Prerunner, but looking at double cab 4x4s now. It'll be a 2nd gen and the prices lead me to higher mileage 4.0s.

So, all things considered, anything above 125,000 miles on a 2010+ going to be an issue?

 

125,000 on a taco isn’t bad at all. You won’t start getting into some minor problems until about 200,000 as long as the truck is well maintained and up to date on maintenance. The 4.0 is practically bulletproof. I just hit 200,000 on mine and only things I’ve had to replace is radiator, water pump, alternator, and valve cover gaskets. A lot of the things you can do yourself for pretty cheap if you have the time and patience

 

Not with maintenance records and a frame that isn’t rusted, usually.

Bought mine with 157k on the clock and loving it. At 175k now.

Test drive it well and feel the transmission.. if it shifts and idles well I’d say you’re in good shape.

 

I figured as much. My old Tacoma was a 2005, but I only had it between 97,000 miles and 110,000 miles or so. Then I moved into the older 4Runner.

 

Just getting started at 125. Youll be good to 300k with proper maintenance.

 

I found a 2010 Double Cab long bed with 150,000 miles for $16,000 that I may go give a test drive. I guess it's all dependent on what SUV we like. I hope my wife likes the 4Runner.

 

I originally wanted a 2012+ with less than 100k miles.. but I test drive my 2011 and fell in love with it. It roared off the line and doesn’t have the secondary air unit that the 2012+ has. Transmission felt great and I got a good deal on it I feel like.

Don’t count out a 2nd gen 4.0 due to mileage.. as long as maintenance is done these trucks can last a long time and look good doing it.

 

Like anything mechanical, it comes down to maintenance. I think someone on this forum is knocking on 450k on a 2nd gen.

 

192k on my 2015! Had it since mile 1 and have only done oil/filter changes (7500 mi oci) and 2 sets of plugs. Original serpentine belt (got a new one but there isn’t as much as a crack in my original) I’ve decided to keep it and run it for as long as I can! Love the truck.

 

My 2007 has 207,000 miles. I've replaced the alternator and 1 U-Joint. Both at just under 200,000 miles. Other than fluid changes, tires, battery, plugs, serpentine belt, and normal stuff like brake pads that is it. It still has the original rotors and drums.

For the 1st 9 years I owned it I put about 20,000 miles/year on it. It's not getting that much use now, less than 10,000/year, and I fully expect another 10 years before anything major goes bad at that rate.

 

245,000 on my 07. Not many problems at all just a rear wheel bearing at the moment.

 

Ask the current owner how long theyve had it for. I had my 2010 Tacoma for 5 years before i sold it and took very good care of it! It had 155k miles, alot of highway miles from traveling and visiting parents. Never broke down on me or had engine problems. Did replace ujoints, brakes, alternators, battery, normal stuff due to age. If you buy from a dealer and it has 6 owners, be cautious. If it was 3 owners and previous owner for 3-5years and it has mileage, they used it well and took care of it.

 

Damn thought I had some use on my 15 at 149k.

 

332k and change here. New frame at 235k and sadly the head gasket popped around 238k.
Bone yard motor with 79k and I'm back on the road.

This truck really hasn't cost me much more than maintenance. Hoping to get 500k...

 

My 2008 2WD Taco just hit 185k. What I’ve done to is minor replacements such as: water pump, radiator, one bearing for the rear and one on the front, complete front struts, front rotors & calipers, rear springs (factory recall) and oil & trani case gaskets.

It runs like a champ and the alt & starter are still OEM (fingers crossed they don’t got out). No leaks whatsoever from the diff or any of the cases. The 2nd gen Tacos are, in my opinion, the best toughest in their line.

Mine is a 2014, DCLB. Had no hesitation purchasing with 112k on the clock in 2018. Now at 138k, I have only done oil changes, and replaced the battery. Wouldn't have bought it at such mileage if it were any other vehicle!

 

I have 135k on my 2011 (purchased new). No major repairs (mostly minor electrical stuff).

I’m planning on 250k before I even consider a new vehicle.

 

I rolled the dice on this one about 10k miles ago. It’s a 2006 Sport and had 182k on the clock. It came with maintenance history but even with that a thorough inspection is necessary also run the vin number through Toyota to check for open recalls, it’s free. I’ve owned seven 2nd gen Tacoma’s and know them well.
