    Hi,

I want to install a cheapo aftermarket tachometer, more as an ongoing diahgnostic tool than anything else... not going to be racing this thing, that's for sure. But I'm not sure where to get the tach signal. The igniter seems like a good candidate.

If so, which wire on there would be the one to tap?

Is there a better location to grab tach signal?

    Thanks in advance.

1996 Tacoma EWD says it is the black wire from the igniter

    Double check to be sure.

The wire could be in the combination meter harness unused

Thanks. I'm wondering if tapping it could lead to wonky running...

All cars should just come with tachs. Analog tachs. Really they should.

there should be a tach wire going into the cluster even if your cluster doesn't have a tach. On my 96 with the 3.4 I was able to tap into that wire right behind the cluster with an Autogauge tach. I also used the clock power/ground/illumination wires to keep it simple

After all these years I never look at the tach but something not right I would pick it up in a second

I am sure I glance at the tach with the oil pressure and volt meter

OK, I found the answer for my car, and implemented a tap into the correct wire, and it works. I have a tach.

My car is a 1997 Tacoma 2WD with a 2.4 L 2RZ-FE engine with an automatic transmission and no factory tach.

I removed my instrument cluster and I got tach signal from wire B-12. There are 4 digital harness plugs going into the instrument cluster on my car, B is one of the 2 inner plugs, the larger of the 2, and wire 12 is the one you need. In my case it was a black wire.
