I cased and replaced the rear u joint. It’d had some difficulty shifting out of park, and now I have to press the shift release every time I want to shift out of park. What would cause us?

I had a similar issue on a Grand Marquis I owned and that issue wasn't related to the driveline. It was a shifter related issue, it broke inside.
    Could just be bad timing?

Brake switch is not working check your brake lights. Check these fuses: Stop Fuse, IG1 No2 Fuse, Acc Fuse, and IG1 Fuse.

Use a meter or test light do not trust a visual.

This was secondary issue when I had the problem, I was lucky to have two at once.

Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
There's a solenoid in the shifter. The solenoid is attached to the release button via linkage. Check that the solenoid is getting 12v when you're trying to take it out of park. Clean the solenoid and plunger, it may be gummed up.
