what is the manufacture date of the truck? if it was manufactured before December 2005 it shipped with faulty head gasket.

be aware, putting a 2015 1gr-fe into a 2006 is not a strait drop in swap.

I'm dreading this to the point I've seriously considered selling the truck before one fails. Now is not a good time to have to shell out cash for another of Toyota's screw-ups (and I say that as someone who's owned Toyotas since the '80s).

I'm in the same boat, my 2005 has had a coolant issues, occasional misfire but otherwise perfectly drivable for the past 4 years.

I'm also looking at a 2015 motor to drop in. Ironically, the newer ones seem to be cheaper.

Besides changing the exhaust manifolds, what else needs to be changed to drop it into a 2005??

Did it start rough then smooth out? Hear what sounds like water running through a pipe?
Those were a couple symptoms if my head gasket failure.

The place I got the engine from claims they sell 12-15 engines for cheaper than 05-11 because nobody buys them since there isn’t really a need for them.
So far I will be replacing the headers for URD equal length long tubes since they are cheaper than oem, add power, and solves the problem of the 2nd air pump by blocking off the holes on the block.
I’m also going to be pulling the valve cover from the 06 to get rid of the mounts for the air pump. I’m not sure it’s a necessary thing to do yet but it’s cleaner and I’m putting cam gears in anyways

Ummmm.... What about the need in the 05-11 Tacos?? You can't be the first person that's ever done this. Newer, lower miles. Why would I want a motor that's 10yrs older? For MORE money??

All the wiring is the same? Same sensors and such?

Because of the 2nd air pump in the 12-15 it’s not a direct swap into a 05-11. With more 05-11 trucks needing engines than 12-15 they are in higher demand. The place I bought it from sold a 2015 engine with 3k miles to me for $2500. Said they are hard to sell and they get stuck with them for a long time vs the 05-11 engines they tried to sell me one with 139k miles for the same price because they sell them daily

I see now from te 2006->2015 motor swap thread that the heads are also different because they have the extra air port.
That makes me wonder, will the earlier exhaust manifold bolt over the newer heads? Is the stud pattern the same and will they cover the additional hole.

Worst case scenario may be to use the newer manifold with a block off, or cut the extra tubing off and weld the holes shut.

I’m not sure yet, it doesn’t look like the old headers will work, I’m getting URDs for it but I’ll be sure to check if the 05-11 headers block off the holes on the
    2012-15 engines

What doesn't make sense to me is that the external SAIS manifold connects to each of the three cylinders per side, and there's an extra port in the head for each port.
BMW's have a similar system, but the SAIS is piped into the head directly where it crosses into each port.
The purpose of the system is additional air to the cat on cold start to light it off by balancing the additional cold start fuel, so why the extra port into the head?
    Just wondering out loud...
