That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

True, but this the recovery section of TW and the vast majority of tacoma owners would probably kill someone trying to do what he is proposing.

Shit, I’m supposed to be up his way towards the end of the year, I’ll volunteer the BRWTRD and my time for shenanigans science. I’m good at putting my truck places it shouldn’t, let’s try snow on top of a mountain pass fire road.

That's like saying the vast majority of corvette owners will never need that amount of HP but then there is the exception that wants even more HP. He brought that argument up to the exception not the majority. The majority don't even get on TW.

    BUMP.

OP - you started this thread and have the opportunity to back up your statement with real word experience, not theoreticals. Please do so. If you dont have videos, hopefully photos or at least text would suffice. This is not a dick measuring contest. So, let's keep it civil.

TW is an awesone resource and it is important that information provided is verified, especially when it comes to recoveries which always have a chance of serious injuries.

Actually didn't know this was the recovery section. That might have been an error on the OP's part. I never go to a dedicated section of this site. It explains to me why there have been so few post in favor of the OP.

I like to think we are open minded and like a good OPINION.

I never once thought it was nothing more than an opinion.

Some of us are no good at defending our opinion and that only brings out the alpha males to "dog pile" on our posts.

Regardless, I've learned an ass load of deets on winch use and ownership in this thread.

Yea, but he should have stopped there instead of proposing an unpractical alternative.

Situational awareness is important. What's dumb one place, may be acceptable another.

I got winched out as a dumb youngster on a beach with with the tide coming in. My work truck :anonymous: would have been lost to the ocean if it wasn't for a good Samaritan with a strong winch. Because of that, for me the most satisfying winching is pulling out people in need that I dont know. Including larger trucks. The last time was a full sized truck off a cliff. Don't think a couple of ATV winches would have done the job no matter how much MA was deployed. Took two winches and a snatch block. It is very rewarding to help those in need and freaking out.

Yea but if it was @EatSleepTacos used math to prove that ATV winch is measuring 6”. Terrible in a winch contest, but not embarrassing in a dick measuring contest.

I already had the rope for other purposes, so (being in Bumfock, USA, after a tornado, where no tow straps available at Walmart were any stronger,) I used it, and it worked.

The last time was from the bottom of a loose incline in the vicinity of Todos Santos, in Baja. Take the photo of the truck Taco-Obsessed posted and put it six feet down the incline. We had slipped into a washout and had no anchor points and no other 4x4s. So a farmer lent two mules. Mechanical advantage.

I'm surprised all of you don't have rope. Go buy some Amsteel.

So, have you ever actually used the set-up described in post #1 for a vehicle recovery?
I've only seen you cite pulling trees with it.
