That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

This has been and interesting evening distraction. I use/build rope purchase systems all the time for work. Never had to pull a truck out of a pickle.

Side question, any reason you guys like Amsteel over Amsteel Blue?

I'm not sure any of these would have happened with an ATV winch. The first one barely happened with my Engo 12K. lol

Who said we don't I've got quite a bit actually like 100' of it on my winch and another few hundred feet in very thin small stuff for my hiking gear and other camping uses.

Pics of said stretchy bungee rope in use or it didn't happen.

Two different flavors of rope that Samson Ropes makes. Amsteel is made with DSM's SK60 fiber, Amsteel Blue is made with DSM's SK78 fiber. The 78 is slightly stronger and less stretchy than the 60. Also has less creep, but probably not an issue in recovery situations.

IDK man. Could you imagine waiting for some jack ass hung up in Little Sluice to break out his block and tackle to help out his undersized winch? Trail plug city. There's a reason that you want a winch 1.5x the body weight of the vehicle. Can it be done with less. Sure. Should it be done with less on popular trails? Hell no.

Another thing I thought of whilst taking my shower just now. Suitable attachment point on the truck itself.

With an aftermarket bumper and “permanent” winch, you’re pulling across a more distributed area on your truck. Meaning your bumper is bolted onto the frame in numerous places and pulling from the center of the truck.

With this theoretical set up, where are you gonna be winching from? The little welded d ring on the rinky dink crossmember below the crash bar? That shits gonna bend.

I’m thinking the point he was trying to make is that the wear and tear of a heavy winch, whether it’s the 55lb one I have or an 84lb 12k winch, don’t make sense on a Tacoma that sees a recovery once or never. Lots of people get them as part of the full kit and don’t know how to use them or will never get themselves in a position where it’s needed.

A winch on the 3rd gen the other day wouldn’t have helped him get revived and may have put him in the bad spot he was in. I’ve wheeled with several people that have receivers front and rear and a winch on a cradle, there when you need it, gone when you don’t.

If you are going out to do a difficult trail and your primary plan for recovery is 3 snatch blocks, an 2k winch and lots of extra line you are delusional. But to have it in a oh shit bag when you are headed over Tioga Pass to see grandma in Fresno maybe it makes more sense.

I bent the stock mounts with a winch bumper. :anonymous: Tacos need a bit of reinforcement before you do hoodrat stuff.

No way. You're one of the most mindful, helpful, fair, and objective members on here. It is actually a little refreshing to see you get irritated with the OP.

Proves the point even more lol was it held on with just the 6 studs? Those’ll bend too, I seent it. That’s why any bumper worth a damn will grab further back into the frame as well as underneath it.

It's better to have and not need then need and not have.

As far as the OPs point goes. It's one thing to suggest something. It's another to suggest something then sling insults about the "macho" look. The funniest thing is he's trying to act just as macho by slinging his knowledge of mechanical systems.

I have climbed for 20 years and have taught self-rescue. I know systems almost as well as most sailors. I've never had to rig anything more complex then a simple 2:1 on the trail. The reason? I have a proper sized winch. lol

The 6 studs plus 2 underneath. Elite made pretty bumpers and they used to ship with all the correct brackets but when you stop caring you take people’s money and stop shipping things.

The new truck has a stronger setup

Yep, mine stays on my truck with all the stuff I need to use it. I can’t remember ever needing more than a single snatch block back to my truck.

Plus I like the way my truck looks so fuck him
