That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

Bear in mind, physics ensures that there really is no such thing as a free lunch! Yes, your 3,000 lb ATV winch will have an effective strength of 12,000 lb using a 4:1 rig, however... (1) It will take 4 times (approximately) the amount of line/cable, and if you need to rig to a point, say 50' away, can your ATV winch mount 200' of cable? And, (2) your 3,000lb ATV winch comes with cable/line appropriate for a winch with a 3,000 lb capacity. Exerting 12,000 lbs on that line will yield some entertaining results (Think, "Hold my bear and watch this, Cletus!"), and trying to spool up cable/line for a 12,000 lb capacity on a 3,000 lb rated winch... you're not going to get much cable on there.

Get rid of your wimpy bumper mount electric 8k. Mount a 55k hydraulic winch in the bed and mount rollers underneath to get the cable up front. Worried that your truck will get stolen while on a hike? Park it UP a tree.

I'm gonna commit the cardinal sin of asking a legit question in a dumpster fire thread, but has anyone run a resettable mechanical advantage system off a winch? If so, what'd you do and how'd it work?

I'm thinking of a Z-drag, but not sure how to do progress capture/resets without prussiks. Cleanest way I can think of is using an extension as your main line and piggybacking your MA onto set bights on the line, but I'm not real happy with that or the idea of breaking those knots afterwards.

Hasn't been a scenario that's come up for me in real life, but interesting thought experiment.

I bought my Warn Zeon 10-S at employee pricing so I'm not the typical case here, maybe paying a lot for something rarely needed.

When I bought it I was living in Oregon and camping regularly. I had it mounted on a 1992 Jeep Cherokee in case of emergency. It's lifted and does really well off-road, and it seemed like a solid investment in case I was ever exploring and something went wrong.

I ended up using the winch mostly for chores around the property we owned, and a lot of firewood collecting when camping, particularly during the winter. Never actually needed it for a vehicle recovery.

Now I live in Colorado and moved the winch over to my Tacoma. Upgraded from a front hitch mount with winch plate to a proper winch bumper.

I like the peace of mind of having more recovery options when on the trail, and I also know it has uses beyond off-roading. I also like knowing that with a winch, I can more easily help others even around town. It's just one more extremely useful tool in the arsenal.

First time I stuck my new jeep I had no winch. I had to dig it out. I bought a warn winch and bumper.

Time passed and I learned not just how to pick avline better. But also when and when not to use the winch.

A winch isn’t a cure all it’s a tool. Sometimes you need it. Sometimes it can get the uninitiated into bigger trouble.

Mount it right, have the right accessories and it’s very versatile.

By the way, I never heard anyone complain their winch had too high a rating or too much line.

100% agree the rear tie in point that most of the brackets go to isn't meant for that and weak also I've still seen them bent with brackets, the OE studs and nuts are very unimpressive.

They make rope grabs for wire rope, something like this or this. I imagine you'd run into issues with the low capacity, as you're limited to the force it takes to crush the wire rope. I don't know of any that work with synthetic winch rope, but also haven't spent much time looking. Ideally there'd be an industrial version of this.

I think the real answer is you'd end up with securing the load using another method while you're resetting the system.

With enough mechanical advantage you can just hold the cable in your hands. That's where the horde of barbarians comes in.
