That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

That's what I did with my $300 smittybilt winch. Eventually it sounded like marbles in a soda can so they shipped me a new winch for free. I just had to send them a video of it.

I had very good luck with these two Warn winches that were on two of my Jeeps . The tried and true legendary Warn 8274 8k lbs capacity winch . That winch saved my a** many times

The other was a Warn XD9000i 9k lbs capacity winch . This winch was awesome as it had a very fast "no load" line speed

The Warn 8274 has a no load line speed of 52 feet per minute

The Warn XD9000i had a no load line speed of 38 feet per minute

Compare that to a Warn ATV winch which has an astounding 5.ft per minute line speed !!!!!!

Comments like this are why I unwatched this thread until I can make a video to demonstrate my point. You haven’t even feigned objectivity by comparing no-load FPM to no-load FPM.

Some have asked legitimately good questions that stem from a natural skepticism about the practical implementation of an odd suggestion.

But the general direction of this thread has been good evidence that the cable news- and 4chan-ification of our country’s culture is complete. Truth is no longer as important as dominating a disagreement by whatever means necessary. (To be frank, speaking as someone who has lived in a few parts of the USA, it’s a good formula for civil war.)

I am not innocent in that regard; I started this by saying >8K rated winches are a waste of money for the majority of Tacoma drivers. Regardless of the truth, I could have phrased it differently, and should have anticipated that a bunch of forum users would not pass up the opportunity to take personal insult, or to dogpile an unconventional idea.

For the legitimate questions, I’ll plan on making a video and will post it here. It probably won’t happen this week. Cheers.

Oh please. Why not attempt to explain how we’re oh so wrong about the line speed? You haven’t bothered aside from “don’t buy a harbor freight winch”.

Edit: based on the math earlier, the atv contraption isn’t remotely feasible. It’s just too slow. You are adamant it is, so clearly we must be missing something. I’m wondering what that may be.

    What truth?

A properly sized winch is a good tool to have. That is why it's a popular addition to trucks that get used for off-roading. Just because there are alternatives doesn't make it a waste of money.

I could argue that a Hi-lift jack and an off-road kit is a better tool than an ATV winch, so your idea is a waste of money. Especially if someone doesn't have any other uses for a $300 length of rope.

A good ATV winch is going to cost a few hundred $$. They're not much cheaper than a full sized vehicle winch. So, by the time you add in a $300 rope and rigging, you're pretty comparable in cost.

Aftermarket bumpers serve a purpose as well, which cannot be duplicated by you ATV winch setup.

You can complain about people and the world all you want, but your assertion that an ATV winch with some pulleys is the same as a 12k winch is like saying you can replace a peterbilt with a taco if you change the axle gearing. There's way more to it than that. An ATV winch + a MA system is only equivalent of a larger winch if you're looking at one specific number. Factor in other numbers like speed, duty cycle, how long it takes to set up the MA system, and even the feasibility of the MA system in complicated real world situations, and its very clear that there is far more to it than rigging up some pulleys.

OK, let’s set the parameters for this video. Go out and find some really soupy slimy mud. Minimum 10” deep. The kind of mud where you have to curl your toes under when you walk or you’ll step out of your boot. Find an area where the nearest tree is 100’ away. Drive to that spot in 4WD. Put it in 2WD and spin the rear tires til it’s buried to the axle. Then put in 4WD and stomp the gas. Now that it’s hopelessly buried, start the video and break out the ATV winch.

my vrx25 has a line speed of 17ft per minute and its fucking slow. Not sure if you actually have real world experience using a atv winch but even pulling out other utvs is a chore. never mind a truck.

Might as well start a post saying “that 4x4 Tacoma is waste of money” considering most owners probably never use it. After having spent considerable amounts of $$$ on vehicle recovery I can safely say I will be buying an 8k winch, in the future. You may never use it, but when you do you’ll be glad you bought one. When your buried to the frame in below freezing temps you don’t want to mess around with A bunch of pulleys and an atv winch. You want fast reliable way of extracting your vehicle. Extra capacity is always your friend and being able to winch out heavier vehicles than you is a plus.
