Pretty much machined the cup deeper so the cotter pin can go through.

 

Oh, I didn't say in my post, but was also doing CV! Coilovers were just the last step.

 

Today, I finally had all the pieces to relocate the rear axle vent.

From Home Depot 10ft of 1/4 ID clear plastic tubing and a 5/16 flat washer



Began by removing the plastic around the gas cap. 4 8mm bolts and remove the cap.



Drilled a 3/8 inch hole behind and slightly below the pin that holds the door closed. Inserted the vent through the plastic, added the washer, and then used heat gun to slightly soften the plastic tube to get it to go on, which gives you a nice tight fit on the barb, as the barb is actually meant for the next size larger tubing.



Next, I stuffed all of the tubing in behind the gas cap and reinstalled the cap and surround, and began routing in toward the rear axle. I went over the frame, and was able to zip tie it to a wiring bundle.



From there, it dropped pretty much straight down where I zip tied it along the thick rubber coated emergency brake cable. This brought me within a few inches of the vent. A 14 mm to remove the old (and rusted shut!!) vent. A little antiseize on the threads, and a 10 mm, and the new union (barb) was installed. Cut the tubing to length to allow a gentle curve into the barb, and a good slip fit and you are done!



About $25 for peace of mind about both the axle not venting and blowing a seal or going into deep water and sucking in said water!! Maybe an hours work at old man pace!!

 

Badass work.... i only know how to change the oil , but this mod is definitely in mind and seeing your post is giving me hope I can do it .... can you post the gas cap area after the work was done, wanna see the location of the 3/8 hole where the breather sits at the end....

oh ... by the way , this plastic tube may also fit to extend the line where the AC drips water ? i noticed the water drops on top of frame and i would rather to extend that line a little so frame keeps dry

 

I added a picture to the original post. Unfortunately, I think that tubing is a bit small to use for the A/C drain. Looks like that would need probably a 3/8 ID tube.

passenger side was in rough shape and needed done, drivers side had grease in it still atleast

 

That one looks like it was being lubricated with dirt and rust

 

The boot was full of it.

 

Also hosed out the bed, looked like one of the helicopter scenes from We Were Soldiers with all the blood spilling out that I’ve gathered the last few days.

wow those poor joints. Oof! Notice any difference when you swapped them? In noise and the way it drove? Or was it pretty ok feeling with them that terrible?

 

I've always wondered why people have issues, mine just pull right out.

I think they were originals with 245k on them. But they didn't feel bad. But yeah..super bad! the left one, check out that gap haha

Pretty sure they were just original. I only spent 3 years in Missouri but it did take it's toll. Otherwise rust isn't an issue where I'm at. With no grease left and partially torn boots and thousands of miles off road..pretty sure any would like like that.

Mostly dirt not rust in there.

 

Steering feels tighter but that might just be imaginary.

Didn’t solve the popping Noise I’ve been hearing though. Thinking it might be sway bar links or sumthin.

 

Well that’s easy to check, just take the sway bar off and see f the noise goes away.

 

Ooof, I think I’ll just let it live on
