If you put the hinge under or near the middle cross bar I think that would work since the cross bar would keep the two sides aligned. I thought about making a collapsible set, but since I only have the rack in the truck when transporting plywood I just leave the tailgate down.

Yeah that was where I was thinking of hinging it.

Since my truck is Access cab with 6 foot bed a bit of extra length is alright, so I am thinking of flipping/ extending the end board to be able to fit 2x4s or anything under 8 feet that will fit. Will likely need a plywood floor for the part the extends past the tailgate.

    Very nice.
The only thing I would have done different is have the end panel either flush or slightly longer. Then you could put your 2x4's inside and cap them off with the end piece. Then you would not have to worry about strapping those down also.

Another solution in search of a problem. Leave your tailgate up put the wood in the bed and use a ratchet tie down to hold the load on the d rings. Apply Occam's razor: The simple answer is the best

Unfortunately I don't have any measurements since I just figured it out as I went. The rails are 8' long and tall enough so that the flat supports fit in the pockets in the bed side.
