So I tried bypassing the amp and going straight from the head unit to the speakers and there was more bass and the speakers were louder at the same volume. What could this be?

Amp settings... try setting all amp settings to full pass thru, e.g., no HP, LP or filters.

Could also be HU settings where signals going to amp via RCAs have mis-configured HP/LP/filters

    Bad amp

    Bad RCA

Back to my previous question about your amp settings...and...how did you set the gain and what is it at now?

I have no filter on and the gain is fairly low around 1/4 to 1/8

Ok but how did you decide that's where the gain needed to be?

I have one of these headunits with mostly OEM speakers and it sounds decent but i know for a fact that if you're using apple carplay, the sounds is TERRIBLE. Try putting it on bluetooth streaming instead of a carplay. If using android auto, unfortunately i have no idea how that sounds.

I have worked with Crutchfield and we have determined that either the head unit or the amp has an issue with it we are going to narrow it down. Thanks everyone for your help.

Since it applies to this thread I’ll ask here, what’s the fix for using the Metra adapters. Or, what are the best adapters?

If you have a chance, post a pic of all your settings. And a picture of the install in the doors, chances are the doors need sound deadening to seal up all the air leaks.

I put a set of DD 6.5s and after I sealed up the doors it sounds like I have subs. But it's just the doors being efficient.

I did the Subaru Kicker tweeter upgrade and the Kickers in the doors currently with the stock HU. I did some sound deadening/sealing up in all 4 doors and the rear wall. I'm not SUPER picky and this is the first vehicle I've ever put speakers in, but it sounds way better than stock to me.

I did the same thing for now swapping in a Kenwood excelon single din hu. Thankfully, I had great results. Separation. It's finally there. It breathed some life into these speakers

What's the new head unit? I did the same thing with a Kenwood kdc-x701 and had great results.

Pioneer dmh-2660NEX. I have since modified some "hidden" settings and it sounds much better. Can't believe all different configurations. I've had $30k home systems with far fewer adjustments. I will still get an amp+speakers eventually. Glad you like the Kenwood. Does it have some physical buttons? I miss a volume knob.

It does have a volume knob. No max, it just keeps spinning. Lots of buttons to push with labels I can't read whilst driving. And ya, these things do tricks today. Geek at heart, old phart. Lol
