Hi everyone opinions please; 2017 TRD sport, located in Rhode Island, 10k miles with rust on outer side of floor pan. Is this normal for third gens? The truck passed its frame recall and a coating was not applied as per seller andToyota invoice.

    Thanks
    Josh

Im going to say thats not normal. The frame looks brand new, but that rust on the underside of the body is not a good sign.

It actually looks like there is still dry salt residue on the underside of the body still.

Once the cancer starts it’s hard to stop...I’d pass plenty of rust free ones to spend your money on unless you wanna make that problem your own.

I don't get scared with rust on non painted/coated surfaces, but that rust on the painted surfaces?

Well, rust is usually caused by salt. I would say that thing was driven on the beach pretty often, then rinsed down poorly.

That would be a hard pass for me. As others have said, there are plenty of rust free trucks on the market.

I was wondering if the thing had been driven through salt water then sat for a while? If it did is this what it would look like? I live right by the ocean however I never drive any of my vehicles on the beach

I live in Nebraska where we spray our roads with a salt brine. I use fluid film liberally and so far the bottom of my truck looks new. Looks like this guy never did a thing to the bottom of his. You can tell the difference pretty quick but always protect the bottom of your truck especially Tacoma’s who are known to have rust issues.

My 01 tundra looked like that after 19 years coating it with fluid film every fall which even an independent garage that bought it said the undercarriage still looked in great condition for its age. I'd suggest the same unless you want it to get worse. I made sure i coated my new 2020 tacoma from the start due to it looking way more prone to rust then the tundra.

There is one thing that bothers me on these tacoma's is what appears a heavy wiring harness that exits the cab right by the drivers side frame rail in the wheel well that is exposed to the elements, and whatever can damage it if off-roading. Just seems like a stupid place for such a heavy cable which must contain a lot of important wires, but maybe i'm all wet on this not ever owning one of these trucks.

Only 10k miles on it? Boo on that. Guy never rinsed the truck off. That’s called maintenance in salty environments.

If the guy was too lazy to properly rinse his truck off, what other things did he cut corners on????

They made A LOT of those trucks, find one that's been properly maintained.....
