Locking tailgate (that's better quality than Pop and Lock)?

Did get a response from Ed and got tracking info. Will post back my results later after it arrives.

Update 6/6/21: 100% do not recommend DynoProducts/DynoLock due to a flawed design and terrible customer service. Write up coming sometime in future. Avoid using this product!

Just ordered a Pace Edwards PowerGate lock. Saw they were going out of stock so I pulled the trigger. Hopefully next week I can comment on it. Any install pro tips?

 

No advice specific to the PE model. Generally, the hardest part, by far, is running the wiring. I followed the original wiring harness that goes forward from that area.

Went through the plastic things on the bottom of the passenger side of the tailgate (had to drill holes/slots for the new wire). They come out pretty easy..when you see it, you'll get it.

From there, I went across near the bumper then forward along the driver's side. There's a grommet right under the front driver's door. I didn't even pop it out, I just poked a hanger or something through it and stuck the wire up. It comes out just barely under the seat, JUST inboard of the plastic cover you have to take off anyway to the left of the seat. Reach under the carpet about center of the seat...you'll find your wire. Wires are blue/red and blue/black. I tapped mine backwards (lock was unlock, unlock was lock), so I just switched 'em at the tailgate.

Let us know how it went and what you think of the brand.

 

FYI - Just received the "HD" unit from Dyno Products. I'm no rocket surgeon but that sure looks like it says POP Locks...

Mmmhmmm...funny isn't it. That pin that comes out of the block is what I couldn't figure a way to align. I do have an aftermarket handle, but I didn't think it'd be THAT different. Let me know how it goes....hope you have better luck than I did

 

Great thread, that Pace Edwards looks solid. Be curious to see another review.. Too bad they don't make a nice handle as well with a keyed lock to go with it. I still have my stock handle but I don't have faith in going with a Pop n Lock either.

 

I had the manual key lock P&L. Within a couple years, it was fading and sticking. Even when I cleaned it and lubed it up good, it didn't feel as good as I thought it should. It worried me enough that I figured sooner or later, it'd leave me locked out of my bed (I have a cover too, so zero access without the tailgate opening), so I got the electric. Took out the key lock altogether and did the paracord mod, just in case.

 

Sounds good, I think this Pace Edwards with the cord trick is the way to go. Thanks, I can keep my camera and OEM handle

 

The P&L manual locking handle has the hole for the camera......but still....not great quality.

 

Yeah, every thread I have read pretty much has the majority saying the quality doesn't make the cut. Sticking with the OEM handle camera combo is fine with the Pace Edwards actuator and lock

 

Gotcha...just didn't want the camera or lack of being your only deciding factor....especially when it's not even a factor. I'm with ya on skipping the P&L handle

 

Agreed, since I already have the factory camera and the handle is made decent, im thinking the PE is the way to go for the sturdiness. That backing plate looks solid and adding some cord isn't that bad. can even get black cord to make it less visible if it was that big of a deal

Nice. Looks well made, and plug-n-play....not that tapping these particular wires is that big of a deal, but some people are leary about shit like that, so this gives an option.

 

That does look like a good option. How bad was the install and do you feel its solid and sturdy? Looks like for 2nd gen you have to do some drilling for it to mount to the tailgate since there is not Bolt n Lock rod make yet.

 

I'm very happy with mine. It was easy to install, like everyone says the hardest part is running the wiring under the truck. Just take your time and secure it along the way so it doesn't rub or get in the way.

Did your PE model come with a plug n play option? Im surprised they haven't made one yet since I don't see it on the website unless they don't have it shown.

 

Very straightforward. I ran it to the passenger door to keep the ability to unlock just the driver door. The harness was perfect and I got the special plug so no cutting or splicing. Only thing I definitely would have done different, and still may do, is to install some dynamat or similar because the lock is loud inside the hollow tailgate.

 

Nice info, that dynamat makes since. Maybe they will come up with whatever they need for the 2010's to make it a simple install. Running it to the passenger door makes since. So to unlock it, you unlock all doors and then the tailgate unlocks. Clever.

 

They call it plug and play but you have to install 2 taps on the control wires. Simple and easy to do. No drilling required and the taps only require a pair of pliers to install.
