V6 engine issue, I think??

Hey guys,

Semi-noob here, just bought '11 4x4 V6 Taco DCLB - put in about 4K miles now. I've notice my odometer speed doesn't match up to the GPS odometer speed. I've been driving like a granny still breaking it in, hoping the speed would recover. Also, every time I accelerate, I hear the engine rattle, could be a valve thing? I don't know? Has anyone in here experience this?? I'm gonna take it in for a oil change soon and maybe check with the dealer.....thanks ahead of time

Never rely on a GPS to determine your speed etc... Youre odemeter is fine, its the GPS that is incorrect. You gotta remember the GPS has to constantly recieve and transmit information to space there will always be a delay...

 

really? hmm because my gps matches like the road signs that monitor your speed or whatever they are called

 

Yeah these engines sound a little different.......if it gets worse take it in. But sounds normal, took a little while for me to get used to it. After a while you won't even notice.

4K.......it should be broke-in by now, you can now drive normally. Just make sure to change factory oil and filter if you haven't done so already.

 

Im talking about your current speed on the GPS...

 

x2. My speedo was slow from the factory when checked against road mile markers and my GPS.

 

They're measured using the same system Distance/Time. If the distance isn't measuring correctly, the speed won't be correct either...

 

Well i guess my speedo is wrong because it sayes im going 2 MPH faster thant what iam really going.

Yep, seems to me common in the 2nd Gen's. I went with slightly larger tires and I'm dead on now with every GPS unit I check it against and also road mile markers. That's also how I justified bigger tires to my girlfriend... I don't think she bought it though...

 

GPS is round about a lot closer. Digital to Analog conversion is not precise which is why digital everything is almost always better. Most likely the speed/distance the speedo/odo on the ECU is right...the dashboard is wrong.

 

My 2010 DBL cab TRD Sport 4x4 with about 2400 miles on it sounds the same. Sounds fine when driving normally - but it is a little loud and does sound "rattley" when accelerating heavily - like when getting on an on-ramp. I test drove a couple of Tacomas before I bought this one and they sounded exactly the same. I figure it is a truck - I agree with the previous poster who said after a while you won't even notice it - I don't even worry about it any more - I think they all sound like that.

 

This is pretty much the same for me when measured against the GPS, I also have a UltraGuage and it is closer to my GPS than the speedo and the UG is connected to the truck computer. ??? I'm chalking it up to manufacturers in cahoots with law enforcement to get us to drive slower and save gas - who me? ya right!!

 

Same concept...Different twist. The manufacturers are protecting themselves from lawsuits by allowing some slop on the low side...so when people change tires/gearing they don't have to defend themselves cause of tickets and BS...

 

i think a 3 to 4mph + or- glance is considered normal for the speedo

 

my my dash says 65 my gps says about 70 but also i have stock gearing and 35's

Oh boy, here we go again "bro". FALSE. There will not always be a delay. GPS is much more accurate than a static measuring system that is affected by multiple different factors.
