Good day. I have not been on this site for a few years as life gets busy.
Today I went to start my 2008 V6 Tacoma after sitting for over a month (I drive my HDJ 81 Land Cruiser mostly in the summer) Anyways started the Tacoma after checking oil, air filter for nest and whatnot and a general check under the hood. very slow crank and then the squeal of the serpentine belt slipping. I left it running and checked to see if I could see where it was sticking. I could not tell where the slipping/squealing was coming from and shut the engine off after running for maybe 2 minutes. Back under the hood I could see the belt break at the alternator pulley and was very hot to the touch.
I figure I have to replace all the idler pulleys as they are original, replace the serpentine belt.
My question is: How do I know if I need to replace the alternator?
I have replaced the serpentine belt about 5 years ago and changed the AC compressor 3 years ago.
Once I cut the remaining (by a thread) serpentine belt off, should I just be able to spin all the pulleys freely and figure out if the alternator is seized? I want to confirm all the parts I need tomorrow so I can order it all in from Rockauto as shipping sometimes takes a while in Canada.
    Any suggestions on serpentine belts?
Anything else I should consider replacing while I am at this?
    Thanks

I know that the non OEM Bando belts you get from aftermarket stores have a tendency to shred if you peruse AMAZON reviews for your model v6 4.0l BANDO serpentine belt youll see evidence of the shredding, check all the idler pulleys and replace belt with all OEM Toyota parts that are defective best bet

Yes, spin all the idlers and pulleys by hand.
Listen to the sound they make, and the rate at which they slow down.
The Alternator pulley will probably spin a bit slower, but it should not make any sounds.
You will know pretty quick which one(s) are the bad ones.

Thanks to both of you. I will take a look tomorrow and order some parts.

Take a voltage reading across the battery while the truck is running. If you get 14 volts nominal the alternator is electrically ok (assuming the belt is installed).

I can't until I replace the belt, something was seized and blew the belt today. I figured I would replace the pulleys before installing new serpentine belt. Then I can check Voltage if its not the Alternator that's the problem.

Here is a good read on the replacement.
I personally would see what ones need replacement.
If it’s just the 2 idlers that are bad, I just replace them.

If it's squeeling and the alternator pulley is hot, the alternator is seized. That's what shredded the belt. Just like dragging your feet when you're riding a bike down the hill.

That was my first thought also. I should be able to tell tomorrow when I remove the remaining belt and try to spin the alt by hand. I will probably replace the idlers also just to be safe. 220000km on them and 13 years.

This is what I think also O.P. ^ try spinning the Alt. pulley by hand first before anything else.

Pulled the alternator today. Totally seized, I couldn't move with cheater bar on it!
Order a new alternator locally and belt from Toyota. I will install these and then wait for the idlers to arrive next week.
I was able to remove alternator from the top.
