Yeah I was reading about the dealers putting in 75W90 gl5 gear fluid in the tcase. I'm sure since it's just 1qt they don't stock much of the $80 toyota lv straight 75W product. Time will tell, I guess.

Like others have said, Redline now makes a fluid for the tcase, I love all their oils.

Since they seem to be using non-Toyota fluids by the drum for engine and diffs, it would at least make sense to grab a quantity of some compatible LF stuff. I know that I have seen the LF fluid in the Parts dept and have no clue what the dealer was using for engine oil during my ToyotaCare visits. I don't think they every checked the levels on the rest of the driveline, which is fine with me because I did. :D

Did my transfer case awhile back with MT-90. Really helped the notchiness. Getting ready to do my diffs.I have some questions.

    • I am not clear, is the magnetic plug stock, or is that something people are adding?

    • I don't see any mention of the transfer case here. Is there some reason not the change the fluid in it?

    Freudian slip: :D

I can't remember which had magnets. Sorry! From the 1st Post, it looks like the diffs do, at least.

There are a few threads on the T case. IMHO, it is not worth doing early. Regrettably, mine came out looking virgin at 7k. I used Ravenol and have since installed the 2LM. With that, I think I will go with the Toyota LF next time as it has a bigger additive pacakge.

I used 75W-90 because it is easy to find. IMVHO, don't feel the minor difference in hot weights is significant.

I recall Canadians reported trouble shifting in cold weather.

I believe that was @Stocklocker ? I think he fixed it with a swap to either Redline or the Toyota fluid. I can't remember which was causing him the issue.

I am mainly curious about wear or damage using diff lube. I trust Toyota and the OM, but it might just be a low friction concern and not a base / additive issue?

This is correct. I changed my transfer case fluid to 75/90 synthetic, based on my dealers recommendation (they did not stock the Toyota LF fluid at the time) and the truck would not shift into or out of 4WD in cold weather with the 75/90 in there. I changed back to the Toyota LF fluid when it became available in Canada, and no further issues.

For what it’s worth, I checked all of my gear oil levels soon after purchasing new. Most were low so I topped them off with OEM fluids. Front and rear differentials required a total of over 3/4 of a quart combined. Manual transmission was below 5mm mark. Transfer case overflowed when the fill plug was removed requiring no service. I replaced the crush washers and torqued the fill caps. I have the 10-year 100,000 mile warranty so I kept to the stock fluids. The hardest fluid to locate was the one for the transfer case. Hard to find and expensive. All that being said, I do like the argument made on this and other sites for using the Lucas HD 85W140 GL-5 in the rear differential for towing. I’ll be changing that fluid out soon. If you are checking fluids check all of them. Crush washers are cheap.

Approaching 50 k on mine. Definitely planning on doing the fluids myself. Probably should have done them a long time ago, been off roading since around 20 k....
