Looking for color matched Quicksand paint?

What was your prep for this? Prime? Or just paint outright?

 

I removed my bezel, sanded it with a very fine grit, cleaned the area with alcohol. Primed and allowed to dry for several hours (it’s been a while, I don’t remeber how long), 2 base coats 12 hour dry time at room temperature, 2 clear coats around 12hrs each on those. I was driving without the bezels for a couple days. Never faded, cracked, or chipped, all the way until I sold it this past February.

 

What color primer did you use? Also was it white/grey? Thanks man. I plan on doing this next week

 

I don’t even own Quicksand but this is a great find for those who do!

If I had Quicksand, I’d use it to paint the TOYOTA letters on the faux Pro grille.

This is nice for those with Quicksand Tacomas. No, its not a perfect match for something like body panels, but plenty close enough for accessories. I like it!

If anyone knows of a rattle can paint that's a similar close match to the Silver Sky Metalic, please speak up.

But what I meant was inexpensive, readily available, off the shelf at a local retailer, rattle can paint. I should have been clearer.

 

The primer in the picture I got from automotive touchup, I don’t remember now.

 

Just finished doing this with the rust-oleum, a bit different in color and quite a bit of work but I'm happy with it for now.

 

Why didn’t you just buy color match covers?

 

Felt like spending less money lol. In total for paint, primer, clear, and sandpaper I think I spent like 20 dollars.

 

Yeah I get that. I found some for $34 online but to each there own dude. As long as you’re happy with it

 

Yeah that's a good deal, I spent weeks messaging every quicksand Tacoma I follow on instagram to see if they kept their caps when they upgraded to aftermarket bumpers and eventually just gave up and tried myself. I'd still consider replacing them with oem if I could find someone who still has theirs.

 

Looks good to me. Could u give a basic step by step on how u did this? Thanks. Been wanting to rid my rear chrome

 

1. Sand chrome with 120 then 220 grit.
2. Rust-oleum automotive primer, 1 light "tack coat" followed by 2 slightly heavier coats all 15 minutes apart. Wash and let dry overnight.
3. Sand with 320 grit and maybe higher for a smoother finish. Wash and dry.
4. Paint with rust-oleum gloss khaki gloss enamel (can is seen in original post). 1 light coat, 3 or so wet coats, let dry for at least 24 hours, I did about 48 hours.
5. Rust oleum crystal clear enamel, I did 2 lightish coats, maybe a third that was wetter. Be careful about runs.
6. 24 hours or if possible 48 hours. Wetsand with 2000 grit, then use a buffing pad to use rubbing compound then scratch and swirl remover. They are glossy but not as glossy as the truck paint is.

I'm happy with them, I sort of wish I bought the real quicksand color matched paint but it is much more expensive for something I'm gonna end up ripping off and replacing with a metal bumper.

 

After a few beers, it all looks good

I've used this Rustoleum Gloss Khaki before and is pretty darn close to match my previous quicksand Taco. Now, I have a brand new 2020 TRD Sport in Cement and trying to see if Rustoleum has one to match my color now.
