Need quick tire answer

stock trd tires are 265/70/16 correct?

is it possible to mount 255/70/16 tires

the reason is two parts:

1) they are $10 cheaper each tire
2) the narrower tire means the same amount of weigh is applied over a smaller area, which means more force for grip

There's no reason you couldn't... They're .5" shorter.

 

Sure you can, but why would you really want to other than to save $40? It's not going to look as good, and your thought process about traction is a little mixed up; you may have more force for grip but you're going to have less traction as you have less rubber on the road.

 

But b/c they are more narrow wouldn't that mean less of a contact patch. I don't think the force applied downwards is magnified that much as opposed to the size of the tire patch in contact with the ground

 

yeah those are stock size, personally i dont like the smaller tire size but go for it they will fit.

currently i've got 265/75/16's (or they might even be 285's) on now

what's the minimum rating required? the ones i'm looking at are 111Q

 

In both of these examples, not only would snow traction be enhanced, but the cost of a Base Model or Minus Size winter tire & wheel package is usually lower than a package maintaining your vehicle's original size tires and wheels.

There's no minimum, it's just going to look sillier and sillier the smaller you go. If you don't mind that though, and you're looking at cost, and are willing to go from a 285/75 all the way down to a 255/70, why stop there? You could save hundreds if you keep going all the way down to passenger car tires.

See my first post, I gave you helpful comments from the beginning. Yes, a narrower tire will provide better snow traction, but the actual gain between a 265 and a 255 is completely negligible.

Also, you said nothing in your original post about snow traction, you stated a blanket grip, which would generally imply road grip.

 

Who is this directed to? You don't even know what size tire you have on your truck. You want us to research this for you but you can't even get off your butt to check out whats on your own truck? Get real.

If you had any sense you would just get a new winter tire set in whatever size tire you have on your truck now (but that would require you to get off your ass and go check out what size tire you actually have on your truck) and just throw extra weight in the bed to weigh it down.
