OMFG! When you mentioned that I started to wonder "why the hell do I have a red RCA cable thats not plugged into anything?". Yeah sorry I'm a complete idiot when I comes to wiring stuff even with things that are this simple. I didn't notice I was actually sitting on the last bundle of wires that I needed.

Ok thanks to everyone who helped pitched in. I got the camera to work. Now with the hard part of fishing the wire through the firewall. I noticed most people used the large grommet beneath the brake reservoir. But the last time i fished a wire through that thing it took me nearly 3 hours to do (it was a thick cable for my light bar).

Is there any other place I can go through the firewall on the 2016 models? My brother has a 2019 and some access points that he has i don't have on my truck. Pictures would be greatly appreciated, so I definitely know we're to route my wire.

I went through that grommet under brake booster as well, poked a small hole using a phillips head screw driver (off to the side, not near the actual wire loom) them fished an old fishing pole end through it heading into cab. I taped it up and pulled what I needed through the hole via the pole and tadah! Removed the foot rest protectors and fished the cable under the carpet floor up to the side of the center console, the bulk of the wire is actually sitting in front of the center console as there is a huge cavity of nothingness there you can stuff it in and the carpet hides it.

Doing it this way you can also see a straight shot from the radio down into the foot well so even a wooden dowel will help fish it up. Easy peasy honestly, hardest part was the OCD of tucking and zip-tying wires in engine bay to have it look nice and OEM. Leave enough extra wire near grill and put the weather tight disconnect near it so if you ever need to remove grill you just unplug the one connection and pull grill off without cutting zip ties.

If you don't mind me asking... What mount were you planning on using? I had purchased one myself from yotaleds.

    https://www.yotaleds.com/product/tacoma-3rd-gen-trdpro-grille-bracket/

But when I did my test, it didn't fit as well as I thought it would. Plus the camera angled downward but at the time I didn't know what the video feed would look like. Only thing I could think of that would work best with this bracket is a "bullet" style camera.

I did the same exact thing but since I bought my truck used I noticed the previous owner had poked a small hole too and I ended up using the same one. I just hate the feeling of poking a hole so I rather not do that again. So hopefully I can get through the firewall from a different point.

I remember seeing how you mounted your camera, kinda stuck out like a sore thumb. The angle looked like it may be okay, you want to be able to see the edge of the bumper or license plate so it gives you an idea of distance.

I completely understand, I hated to pop a hole but I kept it as tiny as possible with the hopes that after pushing the connector through it would shrink back to a small pin hole, which it did for the most part. I'm against drilling/cutting as much as I can get around ofcourse.

Also, if you still needed to know how the view looks from a downward facing camera (from under the TOYOTA letters kinda height) it looks like so:

    IMG_09052020_140122_(800_x_450_pixel).jpg

I've shimmed it out a bit since then, but you get the gist more or less.

Yeah, that's the one I have in my box of mod parts, one of a handful I've done nothing with yet. Bummer that it may not work so well but thanks so much for the background/color on your experience with it.

OK, you've inspired me to go take a photo. I went passenger side as explained in my install notes. I think there's just so much room on the passenger side that it's a no brainer to leave driver's side for stuff which needs battery. On my 2016 there were 3 unused grommets and over a cubic foot of space to work with on the passenger side vs no space on drivers side. Removing the bumper above the glove box is pretty easy and then you have a straight path from behind the radio to passenger kick panel.

photos below. Camera is in bottom flex loom (this is passenger side). I need to redo the tape b/c the time I only had crappy regular electrical tape. I've since purchased heat resistant tape which is appropriate for the engine bay but haven't replaced that section yet.

I'm going to actually take your approach since its more convenient. But I'm assuming you only need to remove the screw on the bumper you mentioned that's above the glove box and pull the panel off. I haven't tried it yet as I had to stop working because it became so damn hot outside.

There are two screws, please be careful. One is bottom right, one top left. I'll get you a photo.

Use this post for some great photos. You shouldn't need to remove the airbag or even remove the glovebox, just the trim so you can get to the screw and then probably all the upper glovebox screws so it's loose enough you can get the bumper out over it. When I did mine I had airbag removed b/c I needed glovebox out to get to the 4x4 ecu for 2low mod.

    Specifically, this photo.

Just a side note, I wish I had used the passenger side to get the wiring through the firewall as getting through the rubber grommet is still a PITA.

That said if you do use the drivers side, be sure to put some sealant around the hole you created just to be safe and make sure there's no leaks. I made sure to do that so that no A/C air or water can get in.

Huh? Mine is working fine on my 2020 Tacoma. I bought the controller directly though not through a 3rd party. You need the 3rd version, not the 2nd.

Does the oem camera system use a different HU compared to the base 8” 2020 HU?

TBH you will be better off reaching out to one of the authorised resellers here in the US or the manufacturer directly vs waiting for an answer here.

Just got the new controller installed tonight and it works great! Both cameras work. Soooo happy. Now I just need to figure out how I want to properly route the wires through the firewall. As a temporary thing I just ran them through next to a hose that runs from the cab to the engine bay (what is that hose for anyway?). Somehow I’m thinking that is not the best place to come through though. I’ll figure it out at some point. Just really happy I have a working controller now though.

Interesting on the METER notations. I wonder if I can turn that on for mine :)
