TRD Sport vs TRD Pro

The reason a Sport shows a lower starting price is because it is available in an Access Cab with MT and the Off Road is not offered with that. Both are priced exactly the same in the same configurations though.

 

Toyota says the 2020 Pro wheels are 4lbs lighter (each) than the 19 and older Pro wheels.

 

Yes, than the outgoing PRO wheels.

 

Just get an Offroad then find a dealer who has some Sport hoods for sale. Ain't that right @Ronzio

 

The 2020 Pro wheel is more than 3 lbs lighter than the 2020 OR wheel, and 4 lbs lighter than the previous Pro wheel.

 

OP here. Just to say I'm still watching (and enjoying the hell out of) this thread. A few disambiguations:

• I am a designer by trade, so aesthetics are important to me; it's one of the reasons I'm drawn to the Tacoma... it looks like a truck should look. And I think the scoop is cool.
  
• MT is essential to me.
• I live in Chicago. Our roads are garbage. But I drive a pretty sporty car now (crosstrek) and like to drive fast.
  
• Some compelling arguments about getting a pro vs a sport with regards to packages: a) It is more likely that the vehicle I want will be available if the features are stock on that trim, then if I want one with lots of packages, b) I've found with buying other cars that when I add on a lot of stuff, dealers tend to want to negotiate the base price and then not move on add-ons. So the pro might be better on that regard.
• I'm not sure I have the time or experience to a ton of mods after the fact, e.g. getting a new suspension.
• Resale value does affect my decision making.
• The more I consider this, the more I think why the hell wouldn't I want to go off-roading if I can?
  
• I'm planning on waiting till the 2021 models are released, so I will have to see if there are different suspensions than the 2020s, but in any event I think the next thing for me to do is to back to back test drive a sport and a pro.

Good points to consider when choosing.

Not likely to be any significant changes between the '20 and '21 Pro line up other than adding Lunar Rock and removing Army Green in the color line up. AG will be available on the lower trims. The '20 has been the biggest change among all the previous years of the 3rd Gen. Toyota moves slow with updates, but typically announce them ahead of time.

Really seems like you're leaning for that Pro

EDIT: It is very important that you do extensive test drives, though.

 

Keep in mind... Driving any Tacoma will be underwhelming compared to your Crosstrek if you're talking about pavement performance and driving fast.

 

IMO you can't have it both ways. You want a truck that will corner well and stay flat? Well that suspension system whether it be spring rates, shock valving, or sway bars is not going to be as comfortable off road as something that were a bit more squishy.

I bet you will find an optioned out Sport or OR much easier than a Pro at a reasonable price. Consider Pro's almost never have any discounts or are marked up a few thousand over sticker.

+1 for the pro if you do not want to do any mods after

Resale on the pro will hold much better than any of the other trims not to say the OR or Sport cannot hold their own.

If you're 50/50 on off roading it may not be worth it to spend 40+ on a off road specific truck like the pro. It's one thing to say you may be interested in offroading, its another thing to be stuck between rocks, in a narrow valley praying to korean jesus you don't scrape the crap out of your new shiny truck.

There will be no suspension changes between the 20 and 21.

 

Yup. That's another factor too. If you're debating between two trim versions, always get the higher trim! Otherwise, you'll always been seeing other TRD Pros on the road and wondering "what if".

 

I actually just to do exactly this with my other cars! Weirdly enough I very rarely do that with the tacoma unless its a fully built truck and I will think "what if" either way. I will say 75% of the pro's I see here locally are pristine, usually stock on maybe a tonneau cover. They look nice, but most owners I see never actually use it for what it is.

 

Just curious, do you have a dedicated set of winter tires?
Man, if the price isn't a concern to you I cannot think of a reason not to go with the Pro.

 

I was this way too. That's why I chose the TRD Sport back in 2018. Fast forward two years and COVID and I'm doing more outdoors stuff now, and looking for places to off-road my truck just because I can now.

 

I didn't want to start another thread (because there's one here) and at the same time I didn't want to hijack the thread (sorry OP!) but I am in a similar position. I don't off road mostly because where the heck would you even off road living in the cornfields of Minnesota? So yeah, 100% highway driving, 75 mile commute every day and was looking between the Sport and the Limited. Was pretty much sold on the Sport until I went to Toyota's site to build and look at options and the OR with the same options is same price as the Sport.

I'm hoping I don't run into the same issues that I am experiencing with my Jeep, so don't plan to get out of this truck anytime soon thus resale value doesn't matter much to me. Price is my top priority, then color (Army Green --> Cavalry Blue --> Barcelona Red in that order most to least favorite and the only color options I want to get) followed by leather power seats and a sunroof and then I'll be buying wheels/tires after regardless (already know I'm going to get Fuel Beast Wheels with some Duratecs slapped on em).

Anyways, back on track. So I was between Limited and Sport, was sold on Sport until I built an OR with the same package options for the same price. Seems people love/hate the suspensions of each and each can handle on/off road just fine. Question then becomes, why go Sport over Off Road or vice versa when it will be a daily street driver?

 

I'm on the other side of the country. I rarely see pros at all. Most of the Tacomas around here are TRD Sport. I'd kill to live out where you are and be able to drive up into the mountains and shit. LOL

 

want a truck that will corner well and stay flat? sorry xrunner not offered in 3rd gen form. i had an xrunner and gotta say i miss it. its an awesome street truck, and the reason i went sport for 3rd gen.

 

In 2018 when I bought my Sport I could have purchased anything, they were all available. Aesthetics are why I bought the Sport. I wanted the body colored Flairs, bumper, etc, and mostly I wanted Inferno, which you couldn't get on the Pro. There were several aesthetics of the Pro I loved; the Grill and wheels mainly, and that was an easy fix. 90% of my driving is on the road, but I have done more off road than I thought I would, mainly because I have the ability, but for me, I don't envision needing the superior off road abilities of the Pro or OR. I am softening the ride a bit by changing to 5100s.

Get the truck, make it yours, enjoy!

 

If it were me, I'd be looking at sedans, honestly.

What will you be using a pickup truck for?

 

OP is in Chicago, I would imagine they want 4WD for the snow.
