Jbl 2020 move or replace amp and sub.

I am not ready to replace the head unit, but I would like to do the following. I’m really find with the sound for now, and will likely start sound deadening when I have things apart.

1. I’d like to reclaim Behind passenger rear Seat space. This would involve moving the amp and possibly finding a sub that would slide under the passenger seat. I’ve heard this is possible but can’t find specifics. Ideally the amp would be in the under seat storage or under a seat. The sub would be under seat as well.

2. If I could replace some speakers for cheap that would be fine, but I am not missing anything right now. I don’t really have an ear for this stuff. I’m sure a different sub would be required to get underneath the passenger seat.

 

Your going to have to go through a lot with the JBL system.. Their amp is required for other options in the vehicle. It can be done but you need to retain the factory amp and pass through it.

 

Is anyone aware of details on relocating the factory amp? And getting it to power an underseat sub (probably powered)

 

It can probably be done, but it won’t be fun

look into the Kicker Hideaway or if the little thin powered subs and find one that fits under the front seat in a 2020 (because the 2020 has power seats so there is less clearance under there.

the JBL amp can be relocated anywhere in the truck you want. I’ve seen people put it in the under-seat storage area. You would just need to cut every single wire and solder in an extension. There’s 3 connectors full of wires so 50 wires maybe? Idk how many honestly. Maybe less. Add maybe 2’ to every wire and move the whole thing under the seat.

*dont do this if you’re not experienced with soldering, especially in tight spaces. If you mess up the wiring and fry the amp, they’re not cheap to replace*

Minor correction, the 2020 is only powered on the drivers seat.

 

Correct.. but you now have to contend with the extra bar under the seat.. I had to raise my passenger seat about 3/4 of an inch to clear the bar.

 

Yeah the passenger seat has a bar under it that nothing fits under, and the drivers seat has the new components for the motorized seat.
Like mentioned above. You can lift the seat up a bit to gain some clearance (just make sure your passengers aren’t very tall)

 

When I bought this I struggled with deciding. I new what I was getting into with the JBL system, but I wanted the packages that required it (Automatic and Premium I believe). Wish I could have the Manual Radio with the Automatic transmission. Then I would have space behind the rear seats. I really don't care about the sound much, I just want my space back.

 

If you're just trying to get your cubby space back, the OEM part number is 64429-04040-C0. Those are all zeroes. If you're not too concerned with how it looks, you can rig up some kind of mount inside the cubby. It doesn't take up very much space whatsoever. The wires are long enough to manage that. For my own application, I was hoping that I was going to have just enough space to keep the JBL amplifier in a small void somewhere behind the cubby panel, but there just isn't enough space unfortunately.

If you want to get more in depth with things I highly recommend checking out the wiring diagrams listed in the PDF located here. The things you want to print out are pages 1-4, and page 17. If you haven't had the pleasure of going through these before, the plugs that we're working with here are labeled S21, S24, S31, and S56. Let me know and I'll go into more detail if you need info on what you're looking at. The entire thread found at the link I provided is well worth the read.

As stated in other threads, there is a wiring harness that will give you some extra leeway to really dig into things and provide you with better ability to upgrade, but it does not have anything that matches plugs S21 or S56 so it can't work perfectly as your extension cord. It would at least allow you to only cut into one wire bundle (S56) though, if that's your game. That harness is

I haven’t messed with the amp but I did switch out the JBL speakers for a cheap set of Kickers and WOW..... the “premium” audio package was nothing compared to this easy upgrade. I also put some sound deadening on the doors but for $170-$180 total including the deadening I was very happy with the results.

 

If you are looking for the plastic cubby trays.. I have a 2020 set I just pulled out of my TRD Off road. 64429-04040-C0 I have both the right and left side

 

I wish I'd asked around before buying mine new!

Is that the one that goes behind the passenger side, rear seat? I wonder if the drivers side is different? I already have it, but I am not sure if the premium sound package uses that same cubby behind the drivers rear seat.

 

Which speakers exactly? And which sound deadening? Did you only do the doors, inside or just the cabin side? I have been thinking of doing the doors and rear wall, just for road noise.

Yes,, there are 2 sides.. the attach together and they are different sizes.. the passenger side one is the width of the 2 seats.. and the other is for the singe seat

 

I went to Crutchfield and put the info in and selected the Kicker door speakers front and rear that came with the plug adapters and speaker holder for about $130.

I used the Noico 80mm and ended up using 20 square feet only on the inside of the doors once your remove the plastic cover. Watching some videos on the disassembly of the rear wall I think I will pass.... Looks like a bit more of a pain in the butt than the doors were.

 

Yeah, I was just trying to narrow it down a little. They are showing 21 Kickers for the front and 10 for the rears.

They should have an option that you select year make and model then it will filter out the specific ones that will fit.

FYI they do not have a plug for the rear JBL harness like they do for the front. Just had to cut and I used a small wire nut to make the connection.
