In the middle of replacing my water pump and tensioner and I noticed I have the common Timing Chain cover leak behind the PS pump. The truck isn't pissing oil onto the driveway yet, so I will just clean this for now and see how much Oil actually leaks out of it. This is a 2011 TRD offroad with ~100,000 mi.

Some people can repair this from the outside by just putting sealant on the seam. The correct way to do this, is to basically tear the engine down to apply new gasket material..... I might try the outside fix first. If I took it somewhere, the fix for this gasket issue would probably run me ~$2500. You basically need to remove the valve covers and take the front timing cover off the engine. It is a lot of work for a 5 min fix with a tube of the gasket material.

Here is a picture of some other TW member doing the outside fix (the engine is upside down in the pic).

In case anyone else has a leaking timing chain cover, it is leaking from this area.

Picture was after I sprayed some brake cleaner on it to clean the area. The area that leaks is literally 3-4" in length.

I ended up putting some Permtex grey gasket rtv on the outside (I spread a 1/4" bead all around the seam (no pic but it is like the pic in the post above)). Ill check this area in a couple days to see if I see any Oil seepage. It isn't pooling in the driveway so I don't consider it a huge issue at the moment.

I should clarify... truck not house. hahahah. The water was legitimately black. On the edges that line the ends of the floor mats, you could visibly see the water color change from clear to a dark brown while pulling the cleaning solution up.

I have an industrial steam cleaner with a hand tool, did them myself. When I started I was just trying to get a few spots out of the cloth seats in the rear but you know how that goes... You're welcome to borrow it.
