I had more intense rain overnight. Checked the bed this morning. Two little puddles of water in the front corner near the cab. I don't know if I can blame the cover. There are two spaces in the corner up where the metal and composite bed meet that I can see light.
The amount of water is so small that the box of kitty litter from the wholesale club wasn't wet sitting up on the ribs in the bed.

    Thanks Mike,
I appreciate the help. I may have to go with a Truxedo Truxport for the extra vertical space? I don’t believe that the Lomax has enough vertical clearance.
I noticed the tailgate gaps this morning and will order a roll of tailgate weather strip when I order a tonneau.
    Thanks again,
    Jeff

I was looking at the truxedo truck sport too. The rails for it do set up higher on the bed rails. It is not a low profile look like the Lomax is. That might give you about an extra inch. I hear that's a good roll up cover and you got to go with what works for you.

Yes, it appears the Truxedo will work vertically. I just don’t know about road noise with the soft cover? I sent out a message to another member to inquire.

Hmm this is not great news. I was going to order mine this week. I get they aren’t waterproof but...
Where I am we tend to get bad rain storms. I keep going back and forth on the Lomax & Bakflip. I had made the decision on Lomax but I don’t know

Well you may have that same problem with other covers. I've never had a truck before so I'm not really expert. I do think you missed the point about the open spaces where I could see light up near the cab. Those were NOT where the bed and the Lomax cover meet. They are in the bed, where composite material of the bed and the sheet metal come together. It's hard to visualize I will have to get a picture it's not like a tonneau cover would seal what I'm talking about. Maybe I can seal that off somehow. the amount of water was very small. I also think that most covers will not be water proof 100%. You might find the same with backflip.

I may have read that wrong the first time. I did not have my glasses on and still don’t. I do plan on definitely getting a tailgate sealing kit. I am having trouble picturing what you are saying but it is clear now it wasn’t that the Lomax wasn’t covering it. I used to have a truck about 10 years ago. It had a soft top snap and it actually didn’t get too much water unless it was enough to pool on top. But yes most covers do a good job although not perfect.

Yep I think that is true. I'm going to investigate the openings when I get time. It wasn't much water. No flood for sure. And the bed also has several drain holes (3) across the front. There are also some in the rear corners.
I did use a tailgate weather seal too I think that helps. Before I installed that there were places I'm sure some water could get in around the tailgate.
So far I like the cover. I don't expect it to be perfect.

Mine is parked in the rain tonight. I'll try to remember to take a picture before I leave in the morning. Usually any leakage drains out the back once the truck moves. Haven't done a tailgate seal yet.

There is manufacturing tolerances at Toyota with where the bed sides meet this section. some Tacomas have 0 open spaces there with a bed cover and others have a tiny spot where there is day light. Some cheap universal foam between the cover and the bed stuck in these locations seal that up easily. Just about any bed cover that sits inside the rails will have this same exact problem with the Tacomas.

Here's the dribble after a night in the rain. Only entry for me is the sides of the tailgate. If it's raining sideways I get more, the water marks through the dust are from loading something in the rain though I think.20200827_065137.jpg

Not true at all and many here can vouch for that.

You vented your frustration to me about the edge of the manufacturer's product being unfinished. That is exactly how it normally is made. The one on my personal truck is also this way. If you look at the many pics in this very thread you will see they are all that way. There is nothing I can do about that way they normally manufacturer their product. Best I can tell you is to contact the manufacturer and ask them if they offer some sort of touch up paint that you can coat the outer edge with. It is aluminum you dont have to worry about it rusting or anything like that. It will function better and last way longer than some cheaply made, non-USA made, Amazon brand cover that you referred to.

The other problem I had with the truck and cover was the bar at the head of the bed on my truck had a wider gap on the right/passenger side than the left. The gap on the right was bigger than the D weather strip you install before the rails that come with the cover could fill. I just added more weather strip to compensate. This is part of what @GotExhaust is saying about manufacturer tolerances. There is one thing to look for on your trucks, of course the extra gap on yours could be on the left side or yours might be even.

What was your expectation as far as customer service? You received the item you paid for, correct? Your concern was with the quality of the item?

One purpose of this forum is for working through problems, customizing off the shelf products, and making our trucks as nice as we can make them through collective knowledge sharing. In every thread I read and post I learn about alternative and often better solutions to challenges I’ve encountered. In turn I try to share what I have learned with others so we can all get what we want.

To your specific concern, my cover has one side with aluminum somewhat showing and the other side all blacked out. I had noticed this before but didn’t think about it much before you mentioned it. My install/review post in this thread goes into one other problem I solved with one of the front latches which was attached a little to the inside, somewhat related to your comment about burrs. And the manufacturer sent me Tundra brackets instead of Tacoma the first time, though they immediately remedied that with one quick phone call. It’s not a perfect product but neither is the truck, my role is to refine both to suit my taste.

My own personal expectations for a vendor include someone willing to guide my purchasing decision and hopefully offer preferred pricing. And maybe a little advice on the install if it’s something specific and not covered elsewhere, but I usually depend on the forum for that. I suppose I consider our collective consciousness as potentially more comprehensive than that of one individual vendor.

I think the question you’re trying to ask is how best to paint the edges of your cover? I’m guessing a resource familiar with spray in bedliner products might be the best one to assist with that if the manufacturer has no advice but calling agricover would be my first step.

Personally I’d like to address this myself if someone else does the research and presents a solution which I can follow. It’s not important enough for me to take action on right now but if it’s a $5 30 minute project that changes things.

I noticed that the edges were not finished black on mine too. It would be nice if they were but that is not how it's made. If you look close at the pics others posted none of them are except the tailgate end. That said it doesn't really matter to me. It's a small detail I don't feel takes enough from the look to complain about or change. There are plenty of other things I'd rather spend my time doing to the truck. The fact that it's Aluminum and isn't going to rust is why I'm not concerned about it.
