Athletics bring in millions for some schools, and even more in others. Nerd ass @ABA180 probably didn't do that for them. Not to be offensive, but lets look at the realities. They also add to the social aspect of school and give students stuff to do. Again, more than an average student offers.

Not saying they should totally remove standards for athletes, but lets be realistic.

When I chose my electives in college, if I showed up on day 1 and it was filled with hockey players, I knew it was going to be a joke of a class. Coincidentally, if it had the female hockey team, that was definitely not the case. Aside from them being built like brick shit houses, the women's team was every bit as sharp as everyone else in the class. The male team had a few bright ones that were legit earning their degree but you could tell the ones that were just going through the motions and were only there to play hockey.

That being said, the hockey team also funded our main campus center which housed their arena along with the bar/club that the university used to bring in entertainment and also some good eats for the campus. I went to a smaller school so while the D1 athletes were sort of on a pedestal, it was a north country small university so they still had to be somewhat grounded and interact with the rest of us.

I went to Siena in NY and was the same. The basketball kids were there for basketball. I used to literally do some of their homework for them.

but if you don’t think me and my friends enjoyed the games, especially when they went to the tourney my senior year...

And if you don’t think they were taking rips off the bong with us in our townhouse parties....

I was happy with the experience. ;)

This is the sad truth about college sports. What started out as healthy inter college athletic competition has turned into a professional level money making operation. Most people are OK with that and there is obviously a huge fan base including alumni. The American college is a complex institution, part learning center, part an athletic club, a social club, a correctional facility, etc. What bothers me most is the ridiculous cost of sending a kid to college. That’s why many parents are pushing their kids to excel at sports, but only a tiny percentage will be good enough to get a free ride somewhere.

As soon as GOVT got involved and guaranteeing loans, the prices sky rocketed. Only loans you can't default on. How funny, pols destroying our future generations for personal gain again....

I have small kids and they stood on my dishwasher with the door down so it doesn't sit level enough for me to do it that way unfortunately. It's on the short list for replacement but the door still seals and it still works, the door just sags pretty badly.

You bottle directly from the fermenter? I transferred mine to a different bucket and filled from there. I end up standing up a case of bottles on that towel and filling them one at a time using that bottle wand thing, move them to the counter, do the next case, move them to the counter then cap them all. The process takes me about 20-30 minutes. I spent a lot more time than that washing and sanitizing all the bottles and equipment though!
I know Siena well, I had quite a few friends who ended up there. It's very, very close to where I grew up. I looked at it but it was actually too close to where I grew up, I wanted to get some separation.

I went to Clarkson so all we had D1 was hockey. Every home game, we filled the bleachers! I still try to make the game when they come beat up Harvard and am surprised to see the number of Canadian plates in the parking lot from the fans who followed the team down.

Morning all. TGIFFF, even if it is a rainy forecast for tomorrow. But, that'll give me a chance to get some indoor chores done that I've been putting off, because it's been beautiful weather every weekend for like two months straight.

That has translated the into pay to play youth sports. The kicker of this, kids who may have become the next superstar player, but may not have the family financial support (thousands of dollars a season) may never have the opportunity to find those skills.

During Covid, we had no school sports, no little league, no pick up games on school or public property (not that kids do that anymore), but pay to play leagues were thriving. In fact, I k ow people who are going pay to play basketball, just in case the schools still can’t play. My city (town) cut all sports from the public middle school. Part of the reason being kids where putting the pay to play sports ahead of the school team.

Couple seasons ago, I put a kid into pitch, think it was like 4th inning, game was close against a team that should have been killing us. Kid throws 2 pitches and tells to me, I can only throw a couple more, I have a AAU (pay to play) game this weekend, and I need to make sure I’m fresh for it.

The kid didn’t throw another pitch for us the rest of the season, by my choice.

    Gotta love PC culture

Yup my being in student govt and the Honor Society didn't cut it.

The school I wanted to attend, Stonehill, wasn't exactly known as a sports heaven. I still remember the lady in the office saying "don't know what you tell you, can't give everyone a freebie"..which I wasn't asking for. But going on just my income under $10k and them telling me it's going to cost me $13k as a commuter, you don't need a degree to see that won't work. I tried explaining my achievements and they said "well we acknowledged that by accepting you right?" Grrrr..on the plus side, my dad went there and was pretty good about contributing to their fundraisers. Until that time, of course

About what I would have done. Sad part is he might have been taking up a spot on your team that someone else would have loved to have

Yep, I made the best of it. Next practice I asked who else wants to learn how to pitch, ended up helping one kid figure it out, and near the end of the season he pitch a complete game. Which at 7th grade level almost never happens, and I as a coach almost never let it happen.

About all you can do..plus keep the first kid in mind next season of course. Silver lining is you found a gem in the second one.

I raced BMX but never did team sports..
