Hmmmm. May just need a third member/diff, but have you ever hit the rear end, say whole drifting or something? Possible bent axle.....either way super shitty.

I may have a spare rear diff but you’ll need gears/bearings for it.

 

I was Towing around a trailer, not too much weight about 200 brick and a couple of blocks. unloaded everything at a job site . Everything was fine, at this point. went to a local pub had a beer to celebrate a very productive day. When I left about halfway home I felt a clunk and Clank whenever I would make a turn. I was hoping it was just the trailer that had not been moved for about a month... Got home disconnected the trailer on the immediate first turn I made it was definitively the rear axle. Put it up on the jack as I turn the wheel I can feel the gear somewhat engage and then completely slip out. After the disengagement I can spin the wheel freely without affecting the other wheel... So... Yeah... Fml.

 

I'm thinking if it might be worth it to just upgrade to a Ford 9-inch and what's involved

So for axle swaps the biggest thing is speed sensors, driveshaft hook ups and brakes.

I was planning on a 14 bolt rear axle. Can go full float so easy to change axles shafts if need. Fj case allows me to get the speed sensor and abs shit there instead of the wheels.

other thing to look for is wheel mounting surface (wms). Believe stock is 65”. Then wheel lug. Most one tons are 8 lug so machined rotors to use stock wheels. Would be cheaper to get a new third.

 

My first search tomorrow morning is a complete rear from a scrap yard

I'd do it. You'll waste a lot of time searching for another just to shave off a hundred bucks at the most.
