My 2020 transmission is great. Zero complaints.

I've had my truck for almost 5 years and am happy how it drives. It doesnt drive exactly like everything else because it's not the same as everything else.

What other truck or car has two overdrive gears in the transmission?

I'm in Baltimore so I feel you with dealing with DC crazies, MD crazies, and even PA, but that's good to know that your transmission was never an issue.

Thank you everyone for your responses, they've been really helpful with getting to know the truck better. Of course, I'm going to test drive one before I purchase one...but like I'm not planning on getting one until the next spring/summer. Right now I'm just doing research.

Honestly the only thing I dislike is how the adaptive cruise control will slam you back into your seat to get up to speed. *THAT* is not a smooth acceleration, lol. It goes full WOT as soon as there's room for it to and then ofc it's gotta ease up as soon as something gets in front of you or the truck catches up to whoever is ahead of you and that transition isn't the smoothest, either. But that's nothing to do with the transmission and everything with how the cruise control is programmed.

The biggest problem is that a significant number of Tacoma owners are confused what the long skinny pedal is for.

Well that’s assuming that it has appropriate gear ratios that make sense for that particular vehicle.
Changing the gearing will definitely help, 4:88’s would help power and drive-ability but kill mpg.

If you use cruise control on even slightly changing grades the transmission will constant be shifting between 6-5-4 and 3rd if it gets mildly steeper

Just merging onto a highway I’ll use sport mode to have a bit more control and shifting from 3rd to 4th you can feel the power drop substantially.

My 2017 still suffers from this.

I won’t say there is anything wrong with the transmission, but I will say my ten year old 3.3l clapped out caravan Shifts way smoother. And has better throttle response than my 2018 Tacoma. Tuned or stock. I know it’s an apples to oranges comparison, but it’s something, lol.

Believe it or not but these 3rd Gens actually have steeper gears than the previous 2nd Gen 4.0. They had 3.73's while the 3rd has 3.91's for the AT and 4.30's for the MT. Programming for fuel mileage, extra gears, and people being afraid to step on the throttle is an issue too.

That's not specific to the adaptive cruise control. That's a Toyota thing. My '13 Sport taco did it when resuming from 10+ below the setting. My dad's '11 Tundra does it, too.

Yeah, rear gearing will go a long way to help that. She's definitely got as much giddy-up-and-go as I need and more so than my previous truck, especially at highway speeds. It isn't hard to get from 70-90 if I need to.

My 2020 sr5 auto works perfect, very happy with the tranny. It just requires several hundred miles before it works like any good auto. Imo, if your not satisfied how well the 2020 works, theres something not right if its still a bone stock vehicle.

I am coming from a Porsche Cayenne GTS with 420hp v8 and my 2020 TRD Pro feels fine. Obviously not a direct comparison (not the same HP/torque) but for a truck (Tacoma) it has enough get up and go for me. Shifting is fine, ECT mode for sporty shifting, regular mode for saving gas. Funny thing is the Cayenne was actually a pretty good off roader, it had a transfer case with a low range (they did away with this in 2012?), lockers all the way around, air suspension with a off rode mode that lifted it about 3" and a built in air compressor. Of course you would need to change out the 21" low profile wheels for something better suited for the dirt and it didn't have any skid plates.

    3rd gen V6 automatic has the 3.91 differential, 3rd gen 2.7L I4 automatic is a 4.30.

Right I was only referring to the 3.5 as it was being compared to the old 4.0. 3.91 AT and 4.30 MT versus 3.73 for the 2nd Gen.
