lol.. sorry for the confusion.. yea i was referring to some extensive skids for the tacoma... maybe some sort of special "mike" edition or something.. lol

    and i'm in VA

just seems to me that you need something that is brutally tough and has some major frame mounting points to keep it from getting ripped off.

    Holy!

I saw you towing your truck near my house a while back and found this thread while looking to see what I could tow with my Taco.

I would like to run with you in RC or the Pines. I am always looking for more locals to run with.

I didn't know there was such a sick performance shop local to me, thanks for the heads up.

    Good luck with your build!

Post race review of the truck:

I had some coil binding on the driver's side. I'll be switching to 18" 650lb coils this winter.
    IMG_3028_f86f83796126007dca1dc5fd980441b8e6e68896.jpg

Mounting hardware for the rear leaf springs were rubbing the frame. I also wore out the rear springs so I'll have some custom ones made over the winter as well.

The torque arm/driveshaft skid worked flawlessly and saved me in the rock on the Primm course.

    Broke a front differential mount.
    IMG_3058-1_9fd037429d2c9d58829ef0638a0ad99f4f1972c1.jpg

Bent my lower oil pan and shattered my upper oil pan when the differential hit them.

Had to remove the front differential and steering rack to replace the oil pans, but fortunately the job was possible with the engine remaining in the truck.

Finally updated my first post to link to the pages of interest in this thread. Reviewing 115 pages of mostly crap was a useful way to spend a lazy Sunday evening. :p

Nice, what are you limitations racing this thing(suspension, power, ground clearance), besides the actual breaks and stuff?

In terms of the truck, suspension is everything. I'm going with stiffer springs front and rear, slightly more lift in the rear, and air bumps at each corner for next year's race. I'll replace the mangled skidplates with another set of BudBuilt skids, but this time around I'll run them smooth as I won't have a stupid differential drop installed. That plus some reinforcements should go a long way towards keeping the truck alive.

I also need more experience in the desert, but that will only come with time.

What leaf pack are you running now? (currently on the truck)

Looking great Mike. Are you 100% set on keeping 4wd? I just ask because Team Shark Attack was running into the same issues as well.

I heard there is a place halfway between you and Cali to go racing. There is even a race March 5th 2011.;)

I've got the Giant Motorsports 64" spring-under setup on my truck. Deaver makes the leafs.

The rear of my truck's heavier than most because of the cage, spares, jack, batteries, and 60 gallons of fuel over the rear axle. I'll weigh everything, take some measurements, and have Deaver set me up with some custom springs that'll handle the weight without as much sag.

    That's a dangerous link I just bookmarked. :D

I'm definitely keeping the 4x4, at least for the time being. I really enjoy wheeling around here and most of it requires having those front wheels turning.

I remember when TSA swapped to 2wd and installed the Camburg spindles after some breakage. I would too if most of the terrain I saw was desert but I still do a lot of crawling with this thing.

How's your truck doing with the new axle? That setup looks amazing!

I'm at that point where I could use new gears but don't yet have the funds for a new rear axle. I'd hate to spend the money to regear my current setup only to swap it out in a year but that might be the route I take. The trussed axle housing isn't as much of a concern to me as the wheel spacers. I really don't like the idea of racing on spacers despite how well they've held up so far.

Ah well. I've got a holiday season to get through first. I'll worry about upgrades in the new year. :)
