That is the current law in Ontario...hands free right? CB's no diff than mobile phone except PTT (push to talk). Aviation comms are also PTT. Dont see the restriction for cb's or aviation.

Why is pushing a button and talking any different than changing climate settings while talking to your passenger? Don't even have to hold it to your face. Cellphone, i get. You have to look at it, swipe to answer etc

Talking to a passenger and changing radio settings can also be considered distracted driving. Essentially the new wording of the law can essentially make talking to your passenger distracted driving.

You can use the CB from your lap or with an external mic/speaker. Essentially just pushing a button and talking without looking or moving anything

How many CB users have your described setup...point is, if it is illegal to remove your hand from the steering wheel to handle a comms device, why is the threshold not equally applied in all scenarios?

So there is data that suggests that you attending to something else (such as a call) can take your attention away from the road. We did some reaction time tests in a lab at school for this and it was pretty interesting the delay you would have between a conversation and no conversation. We also were just reciting words that were said to us and not actually attending to a conversation. Again, the significance we found were significant in terms of data (standard deviation of 0.1 or whatever it was....). Because of this the laws are the way they are.

Now.....the difference in licensing for a ham radio and no licensing for a CB is equivalent to going out and buying a pellet gun and a real gun (the example is extremely different but the principal is still there). A Ham radio has more power and can be used to broadcast private channels, set up radio stations etc etc. This needs licensing for what ever reason based on the Canadien broadcasting association (or whatever the governing name is). Cb has limited power and doesn’t have much use other then similiar use as a two way walkie talkie.

Both essentially do the same thing (my gun analogy ties in here....) but one has more power, this can be used more readily. Also.....governments want money.

Just to add. You can do damage to yourself when using a ham radio improperly. Namely antenna location.
Its the tin foil.hat thing so you don't fry your brain.
    :violent:
I know the discussion is about licensing and laws but I didn't want to forget as it might have something to do with why the license is needed.

All I know is the licensing is pretty tough but Ham is pretty cool and really needs to be learned to fully use it to its potential.

You can build private frequencies, use it to send text messages, radio stations. A whole load of stuff. Pretty cool.

I honestly just wanted a Ham radio since it can also access the GMRS radio channels as well. So you purchase one radio (which is generally 12v and very small) and can have a multitude of uses. No more two way radio batteries dying and nonsense. But I digress.

Installed your turn signals today and didn't break any plastic in the mirror. :) They match up well with the headlights:
