If you can really hear that there is something wrong with your engine or sensors. If the knock sensor is working the ECU would pull timing and adjust to reduce knock until it's either not able to reduce it anymore or until knock is no longer detected. If the former, it would run like shit and there would be a light on due to trouble codes being triggered, probably for misfires.

I run premium which around here is mostly 91. The price difference at the end of the year really is not much. It was habit from my old Dakota where if I didn't run premium, it would knock under load. Most people waste more gas running under inflated tires than the difference in regular vs premium.

Shell 91 here in Canada, it's the only fuel that has no ethanol.. I run hybrid Camry taxi and have many years on regular fuel. One thing I can say is that I find is Toyotas knock sensors from factory are some what either dumbed down or relaxed.. with my truck or taxi the engines with ping on 87 fuel.. that pinging causes deposits in the valves and intake causing the engine to burn oil at an increasing amount... I have found that a Toyota engine run to 300k miles plus on 87 regular will start burning oil and will get worse, to the point adding a quart of oil every 600miles. I have found that switching to 91 non-ethanol will start reversing the oil consumption in a measurable way, that engine came down to a quart every 2000 miles.. until it was written off.. no further changes ;) My truck doesn't use oil but pings badly on 87 octane under light throttle. 91 eliminated that completely...

87 Octane every time since new. No issues whatsoever. 2TR-FE Four cylinder FTW.

Gotta agree with Jimmyh. Never had any issues with pinging or performance or mileage or anything else over many years. Never tried a tank of 89 - afraid she might get spoiled :)

I have a chemical engineering background in the petroleum industry. Putting a higher octane than the factory recommended on a stock engine is a waste of money. Premium fuel is not "better", cleaner, or more refined, and you cant get more power from it. Lower octane fuel is just as refined, pure, and clean as premium fuels. In fact, its the same "base" fuel, but high octane fuel actually burns slower to prevent detonation in high compression/performance engines. High octane gas also allows builders to add more timing, increasing performance without detonation.

Again, using a higher than recommended grade (octane) on a factory stock engine yields 100% ZERO advantages....none.

While I agree with you....I'll add 2 things. #1 At one point early on Toyota mentioned in the manual for the 4.0 that "for increased performance use a higher octane". #2 Some premium fuels like Shell V-Power have additional detergent additives that go well beyond the minimum requirements. So in the long run, there could be some benefit from a cleaner fuel system. I run V-Power in my wife's Corolla just for that reason. Has nothing to do with performance gains but rather her short-trip driving she often does. She works 1 mile from our house and shops about 3 miles from the house. That accounts for 90% of her driving. Her car doesn't get much opportunity to get out on the open road and clear it's self out. With as little fuel as she burns in a weeks time, I figure it couldn't hurt.

I haven't noticed any difference running higher octane gas. Maybe since my truck currently has only 4k, it's still breaking in.

I found this interesting video awhile back

This is not necessarily true. I'm not sometime who spouts the recommendation that people use higher octane fuel than recommended, and I would even argue that the benefit is not worth the cost in most vehicles that do benefit from higher than 87 octane fuel, but there are (small) benefits for many modern EFI based engines. Understanding how the knock correction and base ignition timing, advance igniting timing and/or total ignition timing is determined is key to understanding why higher octane can potentially improve tq and fuel efficiency. I'm not going to re explain it because I have twice already in this thread alone. It's easy to find here or many places on the internet if one desires.

Another thing, while higher octane rated fuel may burn more slowly than lower octane rated fuel, the difference in rate of burn is negligible and has little to do with why it's good for engines that need it. The higher auto ignition temperature and flashpoint and overall higher resistance to ignition is why it's able to better prevent preignition, detonation/knock. The propagation speed of the flame front is such a small difference compared to things like cylinder pressure, fuel ratio, etc which effect flame propagation speed to a much greater extent.

By now you’ve seen a few ignorant responses to this and it matters not that a petroleum engineer would try to explain this. They cling to their beliefs and superstitions and you see the same thing when it comes to motor oil. Been using and driving Toyota’s since mid 1970s. Been an aircraft mechanic for over 30 years. Use what the manufacturer says to use. It’s that simple.

I'm always amazed that swear because their pappy's neighbor did it he was smarter than the engineers who designed it and the company who built and warranted it.
