What octane do you run?

You would think that a "petroleum engineer" would understand how high octane rated fuel works, too. But that would be an unwise assumption, apparently.

    Good question...
Brand new RS 4x4 with the 2.7 here ... 500 miles so far.
With the 87 octane 'corn juice' regular, I'm just a bit under 24mpg. (Toyota says 21 mpg ... So I'm pleased so far..)
I just filled up yesterday with 92 octane NON-ethanol premium ... Just to see what kind of difference it might make.
I'm NOT expecting any more power out of it (Hey, 4-banger, right?) ... I'm just curious to see if the MPG's will be that much difference.
So, we shall see. Although I feel a LOT better about running gas that doesn't have pancake syrup in it.. (I know, I know ... But it's a new truck .. LOL!!)
If it really makes some kind of difference (We'll see) I'm more than willing to spend the extra 80 cents a gallon... Again, 'We'll See' ..

You'd think that people would realize that a "petroleum engineer*" (using your quotes) is someone who specializes in a very particular subsect of engineering, namely as it applies to hydrocarbon production and related activities. But that would be an unwise assumption, apparently.

A petroleum engineer is not a specialist in octane or gasoline motors. Nor is a chemical engineer.

*FWIW: The individual identified themselves as a chemical engineer. The disciplines overlap a little bit but are ultimately vastly different. And while the refinery is the kingdom of the classical chemical engineer, there are hundreds of things a chemical engineer can work on and specialize in that have literally nothing to do with octane and gasoline.

The oil and petrochemical industry is so expansive that are innumerable engineering professionals who will never need to know "high octane rated fuel works" as you put it.

To break this down even further for those who share your horribly misplaced arrogance:

It's kind of how like a neurologist specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of central and peripheral nervous system disorders, but doesn't know a whole lot about knees.

There is a lot of bullshit in this thread. Some of it has the slightest kernel of truth packed deep inside, but it's still surrounded by crap. Spouted by people who read something on the interwebs or were told something by their cousin's boyfriend's friend of a friend.

OP. Run at least the minimum octane that Toyota recommends. If you want to run higher, go for it. It's your truck and your wallet, so do your thing, live your best life, and enjoy your Tacoma.

Quick reminder that octane is not a rating of the energy levels present in gas, it simply affects the pressures required to spontaneously combust.

    Real question:

I run 87 as my default. When road tripping I often encounter pumps offering 85 or 86. Usually that's the only time I switch to the mid grade - my philosophy is that I'm frequently changing altitude and don't want to risk moving to a low altitude on a tank that's below the manual spec of 87.

    Stupid or no?

mpg is directly related to ' aromatics ' ..................Not octane

a gooooood base gasoline will get it done

again reference ' Top Tier Gasolines "

U can get VP racing fuel with octane around 115

yet Ur mpg wouldnt go up

no less they have such a variety of racing fuel................buffet choice

Ran 87 most of the trucks life until I had an OV tube and now it’s S/C so 91+ all day every day now. I would run 87 if I could.

Leaded gas runs cooler if I recall, plus the cylinders aren't as "dry". Never really learned about avgas, I'm automotive, but I do know its awful for the atmosphere.

we raced a 24 hour on it

at wide open throttle not so bad

most gasoline engines pollute worse idling & commuter bump & grind

    165mph+ is none o that

most airplane engine are ' Duty " rated

designed to run in a anrrow rpm range at optimun power

I'm not saying anything about four cylinder engines, full size pick ups, or expectations.

You do not know what aromatics are, or their relationship with gasoline. Or mpg. Or what "base gasoline" is (I don't know what the hell you're referring to as "base gasoline" and I have been responsible for refining the stuff for almost two decades now.)

Please please do not continue providing bad information. Reading an article about gasoline, or throwing out some buzz words, does not equate to being knowledgeable.

    yes i do

pipline gas until it gets to the depot is base gasoline

only 4 companies can pump their dedicated gas up the line

then regionally & seasonally matters are attended to

So how many aromatherapies do I need to take 10 seconds off my quarter mile?
