3D printed wireless charger for 2nd gen

So 6 minutes with all apps put to sleep, case off, phone sitting directly in charging coils.

 

Product had been completely removed. Other version arrives tomorrow. Stay tuned this one will be given away for free.

 

Thanks to @tomwil and @Unchained 5150 for the tips I needed to remove my powerpoints without disassembling the whole lower dash, I installed mine today. I haven't driven with it yet but, fully-installed, it continues functioning flawlessly with both my wife's and my Galaxy S10 and my son's Galaxy S10+ phones, in their respective cases. FWIW, my wife uses a Spigen Slim Armor CS (605CS25815) case, I use a Samsung LED Wallet Cover (EF-NG973PBEGUS), and my son uses a Spigen Rugged Armor (606CS25765). Great product, @ThreatLevelMidnight!


Separately, @ThreatLevelMidnight, is it possible to install LED indicator in 6MT versions by inserting the charger rotated 180' from how your pics show, skipping the grey piece, and using a clear rod with 90' bend that extends from near the SIDE LED indicator and protrudes through the driver's side of the top plate? (Clear rod would simply be affixed to the top plate, with the charger's SIDE LED sitting next to the lower end.) I was going to try this, but the clear rod is bent on an oblique (rather than needed 90') angle.

 

Apparently, the acrylic rod can be heated and bent to the angle you need.

 

Saw that but, ideally, I think it should be longer too.

 

Strangely mine blew the 2a fuse today.

 

Sounds like it might be a bad charger (shit happens dont blame it on anyone). Doesn't really sound like anyone else is going through this. Accidents/damage happens via shipping and such who knows. The OP is doing this to help out us lonely 2nd gen people that want/need some good mod love. Im sure life is busy already for OP. I keep seeing a new post on this thread hoping its my turn but mainly its just you having tech issues. Hopefully you can figure it out or let it go

Scosche has a 3 year warranty, but unsure how they would handle something like this also.

 

There was another person who had the same issues I was having. No biggie on my end, first design flaws that's it.

 

I consider this as a Sold As Is Sale.

 

That was me. Will do some experimentation tomorrow like Unchained did to see what's up. I noticed that when I set my phone on the charger, the light will turn blue AND a bell sound will ring. Anyone else experience this? Not the normal sound your phone makes when you connect it to a charger but more of a bell ring.

 

FWIW, I don't believe that there is universal Qi compatibility between all chargers and all devices. I've got a new car that has a wireless charging tray. GF's Samsung works perfect. I've got an old iPhone 6s with Qi enabling case that has worked in everything I've ever put it on. It wouldn't work in the car and I was about to bite the upgrade bullet. Found an older case in the junk drawer and tried it just as problem isolation. Sure enough it worked. I also remember getting a dual charging cradle. If we put any one phone on it would work. If we put both phones in tandem it would Tango Uniform.

Is there a way you might take just the charging cradle inside and power it independently? Then you might be able to try out different phones to see if it's leaning to being a potential infant mortality on the cradle or an obscure compatibility issue.

To me, this is a case of standing on the shoulders of giants. It took some effort to craft a solution and package it in a way that others might benefit. There's nothing to keep anybody from taking the concept and striking out with their own construction and components. I think one might find that the effort to do so significantly exceeds the cost asked for this solution. Or perhaps even substituting your cradle of choice in to the cage might be a viable option. You're ahead of the game with the wiring done and cradle adapter in place.

When I took it out so my phone was sitting on top of the charging coils it still did the same thing. Turned Blue made a beep sound, then did zero charging even though the screen said Wireless Charging. I have an S8 and my wife and son have an S7. Their phones did the same exact thing, not really sure what the issue is.

 

I think you've tried everything so far. There are "known good" phones that work with "known good" chargers. If you had access to someone who also had this solution installed and working, then you could try your phone in their system and their phone in your system to further isolate. However at this point, it's starting to get academic.

The fact that you get the handshake indicating that the charger recognizes a device and should therefore activate the charging coils is also telling. Perhaps one more thing to try just for giggles. The charge coils have a "sweet spot" that interacts with a receiving induction coil in the phone. The layout of the charger shows three physical coils. If there were a circuit open for the middle coil it looks to me like the wiring is such to allow the other coils to still energize. If you have only been placing the phone laterally on the pad then only the middle coil has ever been engaged. One experiment would be to rotate the phone 90 degrees and move to either side to engage one of the side coils. You should still get the handshake, but a different coil would be engaged. If it charges then you have an answer but not necessarily satisfaction. If it still doesn't charge then I will sacrifice a beer in your name at the local bar in hopes that the gods of electronics be appeased.

 

I tried that and the phone is elevated off the charging platform lessoning contact even more. Remember I took it all out and placed my bare phone on the coils and it did the same thing nothing. I got the Scosche today and will install in about an hour and see how it goes. It's a MOD, great product just doesn't work at all for me. He did a great job, I think he needs to figure out a way for the phone to be directly on the charging area, that might help.

 

I reached out to the company that makes the chargers to see if I can get a replacement unit for you, I'll PM you and let you know what they get back to me with.

That's just the indicator noise from the charger that it's connected. If you're still having issues that you think are on the chargers end lmk and I'll see if I can help you out with getting a new one.

 

Just did the install on the Scosche and sadly it doesn't wirelessly charge my phone either.

Just did a big Google search and in device care there was no option for wireless charging. You needed to hook it up to a Samsung world wireless charger then go back into device care and then fast wireless charging will appear. So now even though it has fast wireless charging ability now it charges for a few minutes then automatically pauses fast charging. WTF
