P0500 code--Vehicle Speed Sensor

Check the IG1 NO2 Fuse which effects all of those things. It is in the fuse panel to the left of the steering wheel behind the pull out cubbey pocket.

 

I checked all the fuses?

Any other ideas?

That isn't a good indicator. It could still be blown. Check it with a ohmmeter, DMM Multimeter, or a test lamp if you want to be sure.

I just popped 0500 as well. All gauges work. Trans seems to be shifting fine. Plan to meter the sensors on the tranny and send out for new cluster if they check ok. Can I drive it without the cluster is my big question.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have this issue and need help tracing a short somewhere.

I'm getting the P0500 code and my wheel sensors are good. Get readings from OBDLink and checked continuity and voltages of the ABS harnesses. In the live data, I see Vehicle Speed is 0 but get speeds from all 4 wheel sensors as well as from the ABS, engine, cruise control modules in the OBDLINK Toyota addon modules.

I checked the v-w wire continuity between the combo meter and ECU and that's good and I ended up replacing the combo meter but that did not fix the issue.

Where else can I trace the v-w speed sensor wire to find the short? I see a large v-w wire on the ABS controller but it does not have continuity to the combo meter plug nor the ECU but not sure if I'm looking at the right ones. Are there plugs in the driver side kick panel or fuse box I can check? All fuzes are good.

 

when you bought your new instrument cluster, did you buy new or used? When I had my 2005 I bought a cluster from tanin auto at https://www.taninautoelectronix.com/product/2005-2011-toyota-tacoma-instrument-cluster/ and it fixed my code.

 

I bought the cluster from Tanin Auto as well and I think it was a new one they programmed because they had to order one for a manual transmission.

 

Not sure about a 2014, but on our 2005 manual trans. the combo meter gets it's speed from a speed sensor gear at the back of the transmission.
I had an issue with the speedometer dropping to zero intermittently and it would also cause cruise control to stop working when it did it.
I had to replace both my combo meter and the speed sensor, one or other didn't do it.
(just my $0.02, saw this issue and it reminded me of our similar issue.)

 

I had this same code P0500 (Tacoma 2007 AT) and everything worked fine except the CE light was on. I suspected the instrument cluster because I had once had to fix the thermometer/compass due to poor solder joints. So I bought a renewed one from Tanin Electronix (recommended! They even adjusted the mileage) on eBay and it solved the problem.

 

So this must be my issue too. My 05 has had this for a few years . I suspected it was the radio since it has the ability to turn it self up or down and change stations by itself ( I have no idea why). I thought it was one of those radios that adjusted volume to speed of vehicle. But since you mentioned instrument cluster , sometimes my Speedo and or tachometer does not work .. I’m gonna check into this and check Tanix out , thanks

New here and hoping I can get some help on this. I'm having similar issue as OP with P0500 code triggering CEL. So far have replaced speed sensor on tranny and have checked all wheel sensors and they are clean and well connected. All wiring appears to be intact. Got an OBDII scan tool and have found that while driving the Vehicle Speed Sensor goes to 0 mph but speedometer continues to work fine. The only other code I get when CEL is on is C1241, which is abnormal voltage to brakes. I've checked battery with multimeter while truck is idling and I'm getting around 14V. Also not losing power while driving. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

 

I'm glad to hear that you all have had a good experience with Tanin. They currently have my cluster for repair. I was getting the p0500 A for over two years. Even the local Toyota dealership was not able to tell me definitively that it was the cluster. I have replaced all the wheel SS and was at a loss as to my next move because I was still getting the CE light. Fingers crossed that they can fix it!
